Narrations of the beardless youth

Hadith No: 1

"... In this narration from Ibn Abi Dawood, it is mentioned that Ibn Abbas was asked: ‘Did Muhammad see his Lord?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ He was then asked: ‘How did he see Him?’ Ibn Abbas said: ‘In the form of a young man with a veil of pearls below him, and it seemed as if his feet were in a green area.’ I said to Ibn Abbas: ‘Does this not contradict the verse: {No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision; He is Subtle and Aware} (Al-An’am: 103)?’ He replied: ‘No, may your mother lose you! That is His light, which is His light. When He manifests with His light, nothing can perceive Him.’ This indicates that he saw Him and reported seeing Him in the form of a young man with a veil and green below His feet. This vision aligns with the verse and is explained as such. It suggests that it was a vision with the eyes, as narrated in the authentic hadith reported by Qatadah from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas, where the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘I saw my Lord in the form of a beardless young man with flowing, curly hair in a green garden.’"

Al-Haythami - Majma' al-Zawa'id - The Book of Interpretation - Chapter on what the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw in a dream
Volume: (7) - Hadith Number: (178)
11738 - And from Abd al-Rahman ibn A'ish, from some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came out to them one morning, feeling good and with a bright - or radiant - face. So we said: O Messenger of Allah, we see you with a bright or radiant face. He said: What would prevent me, when my Lord came to me tonight in the best form and said: O Muhammad? I replied: Here I am, my Lord, and gladly. He said: In what is the Highest Assembly disputing? I said: I do not know, O Lord. He said: That is the case, twice or three times. Then He placed His hands between my shoulders, and I felt their coolness between my breasts, until what was in the heavens and what was on the earth was made clear to me. Then He recited this verse: {And thus We showed Ibrahim the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that he might be of those who are certain} (Surah al-An'am 6:75). Then He said: O Muhammad, in what is the Highest Assembly disputing? I replied: In expiations. He said: And what are expiations? I said: Walking on foot to congregational prayers, sitting in the mosque between the obligatory prayers, and performing ablution in times of difficulty. Whoever does this will live well, die well, and be as free from sin as on the day his mother bore him. Among the degrees are kind words, spreading peace, feeding the hungry, and praying at night while the people are asleep. And he said: O Muhammad, when you pray, say: O Allah, I ask You for good things, to avoid what is wrong, to love the needy, and to be forgiven. And if You intend a trial for the people, take me away without being tested. Ahmad narrated it, and its men are trustworthy.

Al-Haythami - Majma' al-Zawa'id - The Book of Interpretation of Dreams - Chapter on What the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) Saw in a Dream

Volume: (7) - Hadith Number: (179)

11745 - Umm al-Tufayl, the wife of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "I saw my Lord in a dream in the form of a young man with abundant hair, dressed in green, wearing golden sandals, and on His face was a golden veil."

Al-Tabarani narrated this hadith, and Ibn Hibban stated that it is a munkar (denounced) hadith because ‘Umara ibn ‘Amir ibn Hazm al-Ansari did not directly hear it from Umm al-Tufayl. Ibn Hibban mentioned this in ‘Umara’s biography in al-Thiqat (The Trustworthy).

They said: Another indication of this is the hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Wahb, from ‘Amr ibn al-Harith, from Sa’id ibn Abi Hilal, from Marwan ibn ‘Uthman, from ‘Umara ibn ‘Amir, from Umm al-Tufayl, the wife of Ubayy ibn Ka'b. She said that she heard the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) mention that he saw his Lord in a dream in the form of a young man with abundant hair, dressed in green, lying on a golden bed, with golden sandals on His feet.

Abu Muhammad commented: We did not mention the interpretation of those who interpreted this hadith because we considered it correct, but rather, we mentioned it to show that there are those who have interpreted it and used these two hadiths as evidence.

Narration Mentioning the Report from Umm al-Tufayl, the Wife of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on This Matter

Volume: (1) - Page Number: (358)

Hadith Number: (286)

286 - Muhammad ibn Isma’il al-Farisi narrated to us, saying: Abu Zur’ah al-Dimashqi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Salih narrated to us, saying: Ibn Wahb narrated to me, saying: ‘Amr ibn al-Harith informed me that Sa’id ibn Abi Hilal informed him that Marwan ibn ‘Uthman informed him from ‘Umara ibn ‘Amir, from Umm al-Tufayl, the wife of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) mention that he saw his Lord, Mighty and Majestic be He, in a dream in the form of a young man with abundant hair, His feet in green, wearing golden sandals, and with a golden veil on His face.

Abu Zur’ah said: All these men are known, and they have strong genealogies in Madinah. As for Marwan ibn ‘Uthman, he is Marwan ibn ‘Uthman ibn Abi Sa’id al-Mu'alla al-Ansari. As for ‘Umara, he is the son of ‘Amir ibn ‘Umar ibn Hazm, a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). There is no doubt regarding ‘Amr ibn al-Harith or Sa’id ibn Abi Hilal. And suffice it to say that Abdullah ibn Wahb is a reliable transmitter in his religion and virtue.

From al-Bayhaqi’s al-Asma wa al-Sifat, Chapter on Allah’s statement: {Then he drew near and came down, until he was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer} (53:8-9):

Narrated by Abu Sa’d Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Malini, who narrated from Abu Ahmad ibn ’Adi al-Hafiz, who narrated from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Asim, who narrated from Ibrahim ibn Abi Suwayd al-Dhira’, who narrated from Hammad ibn Salama. And narrated by Abu Sa’d al-Malini, from Abu Ahmad ibn ‘Adi al-Hafiz, who narrated to me from al-Hasan ibn Sufyan, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Rafi’, who narrated from Aswad ibn ’Amir, who narrated from Hammad ibn Salama, from Qatadah, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, “I saw my Lord as a young man with curly hair, wearing a green cloak.”

Abu Ahmad also narrated from Ibn Abi Sufyan al-Mawsili and Ibn Shahriyar, who both narrated from Muhammad ibn Ruzqullah ibn Musa, who narrated from Aswad ibn ’Amir, with the same chain, except that he said, “in the form of a young man with no beard and curly hair.” Ali ibn Shahriyar added: “He wore a green cloak.” Al-Nadr ibn Salamah narrated from Aswad ibn ’Amir, with the same chain, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw his Lord in the form of a young man with no beard, veiled by a curtain of pearls, with His feet—or he said, His legs—in green.

From al-Bayhaqi’s al-Asma wa al-Sifat, Chapter on Allah’s statement: {Then he drew near and came down, until he was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer} (53:8-9):

Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan al-Harbi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn ‘Isa al-Misri narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Wahb narrated to me, saying: Amr ibn al-Harith al-Ansari informed me, from Sa’id ibn Abi Hilal, from Marwan ibn ’Uthman, from ’Umara ibn ‘Amir, from Umm al-Tufayl—the wife of Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him)—who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) mention that he saw his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, in a dream in the form of a young man with abundant hair, in green garments, on a golden bed, with golden sandals on His feet. The term “abundant” means with thick hair, and “in green” refers to green garments. This is similar to what was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and it is an account of a dream he saw. Scholars say that visions in dreams can be symbolic, where Allah makes it a sign for the dreamer regarding a past or future matter, in the manner of symbolic interpretation.

- As for the report about Umm al-Tufayl, it was narrated by Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Tirmidhi and others: They said: Nu'aym narrated to us, saying: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn al-Harith narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal, that Marwan ibn Uthman informed him, from Imarah ibn Amir, from Umm al-Tufayl - the wife of Ubay ibn Ka'b - who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) mention that he saw his Lord in a form like this." This is a very weak report. Nasai was right in saying: "And what is known about Marwan ibn Uthman that he can be believed in Allah?" Nu'aym was not alone in this, for it was also narrated by Ahmad ibn Salih al-Misri, the hafiz, Ahmad ibn Isa al-Tustari, and Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Wahb, from Ibn Wahb. Abu Zur'ah al-Nasri said: "Its narrators are known."
- I say, there is no doubt that Ibn Wahb and his teacher and Ibn Abi Hilal all conveyed it, and they are known to be trustworthy. As for Marwan, what do you know of Marwan? He is the grandson of Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla al-Ansari, and his teacher is Imarah ibn Amir ibn Amr ibn Hazm al-Ansari. And even if we allow that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said it, he is most knowledgeable of what he said; and his vision of it in a dream has an interpretation that neither he nor we could adequately express. We may either take it at its literal sensorial meaning, or, far from Allah be it, we would not believe in engaging in such matters, to the point that some scholars of distinction have said: "The hadith was miswritten; it is only: 'a vision was seen' (with a doubled 'ya')." And Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Speak to the people what they know and leave what they deny." It is established that Abu Huraira concealed many hadiths that Muslims do not need in their religion, and he would say: "If I were to disclose them to you, it would cut this throat." This is not a matter of withholding knowledge, for obligatory knowledge must be disseminated and shared, and it is incumbent upon the Muslim community to preserve it. Knowledge concerning the virtues of deeds that can be reliably transmitted is necessary, its dissemination is strongly encouraged, and the community should be attentive to its transmission. Knowledge that is permissible does not need to be widely shared, and only a select group of scholars should engage in it.

1409 - (I saw my Lord on the Day of Departure (Nafr) on a speckled camel, wearing a woolen cloak, in front of the people). The reader said: This is fabricated; it has no basis in the proofs (dalail). Al-Subki said: The hadith "I saw my Lord in the form of a young man without a beard" is being circulated among the teachings of some Sufis and is a fabricated lie against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). However, in al-Laali' there is a report from Ibn Abbas that he (Ibn Abbas) raised it, saying, "I saw Him in the form of a young man with thick hair," and it was narrated in the form of a young man without a beard." Ibn Sadaqah said, from Abu Zur'ah: Ibn Abbas's hadith is only denied by an Mu'tazili. It was also narrated in some versions that he saw Him with his heart. The hadith, if understood as a vision in a dream, poses no problem, and if understood as an awakening, Ibn al-Himam responded that this is a veil of form. Al-Qari noted that he seemed to mean by this a pictorial manifestation.
