2964 - Abu al-‘Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub narrated to us, saying: al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazyad informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Shu‘ayb ibn Shabur narrated to us, saying: ‘Abdullah ibn al-‘Ala’ ibn Zabr, from Bisr ibn ‘Ubaydullah, from Abu Idris, from Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to recite: “When those who disbelieved harbored in their hearts the disdain, the disdain of ignorance, then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger.” This reached Umar, and it weighed on him, so he sent for him while he was tarring a she-camel. He entered upon him and called some people from his companions, among them Zayd ibn Thabit, and said: “Who among you recites Surah al-Fath?” Zayd recited it as we do today, and Umar was stern with him. Ubayy said to him: “Shall I speak?” He said: “Speak.” Ubayy said: “You know that I used to enter upon the Prophet (S) and he would teach me, while you were outside the door. If you wish me to teach people as he taught me, I will, and if not, I will not recite a single letter as long as I live.” He said: “Indeed, teach the people.” … This is an authentic hadith according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs, though they did not record it.
