Muhammad bin ‘Ubaydah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad bin Ashkab narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi ‘Ubaydah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us from al-A‘mash, from Abu Ishaq, from ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, who said: “‘Abdullah used to remove the two protecting surahs from his copies of the Mushaf and would say: ‘They are not from the Book of Allah, Exalted.’” Sulaiman said: And ‘Asim narrated to us from Zir, from Ubayy bin Ka‘b, who asked the Prophet (S) about them, and he said: “I was told, ‘Say,’ so I said.”

4428 - ‘Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Azdi narrated to us, saying: Ishaq bin Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: al-Nadr bin Shumayl narrated to us, saying: Hammad bin Salamah narrated from ‘Asim bin Abi al-Najud, from Zir, from Ubayy bin Ka‘b, who said: “Surah al-Ahzab was similar in length to Surah al-Baqarah, and in it was: ‘The elderly man and the elderly woman, if they commit adultery, then stone them absolutely.’”

4429 - Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Makram narrated to us in Basra, saying: Dawud bin Rashid narrated to us, saying: Abu Hafs al-Abbar narrated to us from Mansur, from ‘Asim bin Abi al-Najud, from Zir bin Hubaysh, who said: I met Ubayy bin Ka‘b and said to him: “Ibn Mas‘ud used to remove the two protecting surahs from the copies of the Mushaf and would say: ‘They are not from the Quran, so do not include in it what is not part of it.’” Ubayy said: It was said to the Messenger of Allah (S) and he said to us: “How many verses do you count in Surah al-Ahzab?” I replied: “Seventy-three.” Ubayy said: “By the One in whose name oaths are taken, it was equal to Surah al-Baqarah in length, and we used to recite in it the verse of stoning: ‘The elderly man and the elderly woman, if they commit adultery, then stone them absolutely as a deterrent from Allah, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.’”
