Abu Mutarrif bin Abi al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah narrated to us from ‘Amr bin Dinar from Bijalah, who said: ‘Umar passed by a boy who had a Mushaf and was reciting: “The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers” (Al-Ahzab: 6) “and he is a father to them.” ‘Umar said, “O boy, erase it.” He replied, “This is the Mushaf of Ubayy bin Ka‘b.” So he went to Ubayy and said, “What is this?” Ubayy cried out loudly, “The Quran occupied me, while the market kept you busy.” ‘Umar then left.

Muhammad bin al-Sabah narrated to us, saying: Hushaym narrated to us, saying: Mughira narrated to us from Ibrahim from Khurashah bin al-Hurr, who said: ‘Umar bin al-Khattab saw with me a tablet on which was written: “When the call is proclaimed for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah” (Al-Jumu‘ah: 9). He asked, “Who dictated this to you?” I said, “Ubayy bin Ka‘b.” He said, “Ubayy was the most knowledgeable of us regarding abrogated verses; he recited it as, ‘Then proceed to the remembrance of Allah.’”
