Umar ibn al-Khattab asked, “Who taught you this recitation?” They replied, “Ubayy ibn Ka'b.” Umar then said to a man from Madinah, “Call Ubayy ibn Ka'b for me,” and he said to one of the men from Damascus, “Go with him.” They went and found Ubayy ibn Ka'b at his home applying tar to a camel with his own hand. They greeted him, and the man from Madinah said, “Answer the call of the Commander of the Faithful, Umar.” Ubayy ibn Ka'b asked, “Why did the Commander of the Faithful summon me?” The man from Madinah informed him of what had happened, and Ubayy said to the man from Damascus, “By Allah, you people of this group will not stop until the worst of you comes forward!” Then he came to Umar ibn al-Khattab, sleeves rolled up, with tar on his hands. When he reached Umar ibn al-Khattab, Umar said to them, “Recite,” and they recited: "And if you had shown zealotry as they had shown zealotry, the Sacred Mosque would have been corrupted." Ubayy said, “Yes, by Allah, O Umar, I taught them this recitation.” Umar ibn al-Khattab then said to Zayd ibn Thabit, “Recite, O Zayd,” and Zayd recited the standard recitation. Umar said, “O Allah, I recognize only this.” Ubayy then said, “By Allah, O Umar, you know that I would attend when they were absent, I would be brought near while they were kept away, and certain things were done to me that were not done to them. By Allah, if you wish, I will remain in my house and never speak of anything or teach anyone until I die.” Umar ibn al-Khattab replied, “O Allah, forgive us. We know that Allah has given you knowledge; so teach the people what you know.”
