- Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Know, may Allah have mercy on us and you, that after Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), there was no one more deserving of the caliphate than Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) because of the virtues with which Allah, the Almighty, honored him, the noble favors that the Generous One specifically bestowed upon him, and the way in which Allah, the Exalted, elevated him through his noble precedents and his great status with Allah, the Almighty, with His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), with his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and with all the believers. Honor was gathered for him from every direction; there is no noble quality that he was not specifically endowed with by Allah, the Exalted: the cousin of the Messenger, the brother of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the husband of Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), the father of Hasan and Husayn, the two grandchildren of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the one whom the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) loved, the knight of the Arabs, the reliever of crises for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and whom Allah, the Exalted, commanded His Prophet to engage in a mutual cursing (mubahala) with the People of the Book when they invited him to do so. Then Allah, the Exalted, said: "Say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves.'" Thus, our sons and your sons were Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them), our women and your women were Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and ourself and yourselves was Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and whom Allah and His Messenger love." Then he called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and handed him the banner, and that was on the Day of Khaybar, and Allah, the Generous, opened (the city) through his hands. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was informed that Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was one who loved Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and that Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger loved Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Baridah al-Aslami narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "My Lord, the Almighty, commanded me to love four and informed me that He loves them: You, O Ali, are one of them. You, O Ali, are one of them. You, O Ali, are one of them," repeated three times. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked about Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and she said: "I have never seen anyone who was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) than him, nor a woman who was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) than his wife." It is narrated from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father and grandfather, that Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Muhammad, Allah, the Exalted, commands you to love Ali and to love those who love Ali." Anas ibn Malik narrated: "The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was brought a mountain bird and said: 'O Allah, send me a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and whom Allah and His Messenger love.'" Suddenly, Ali ibn Abi Talib was at the door, knocking. Anas said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is busy," but he returned a second and third time, saying: "O Anas, admit him; I intended him." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Allah, to me! O Allah, to me!" And the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "You are to me like Aaron to Moses," and this was when he left him in the Battle of Tabuk to oversee the city. Some of the hypocrites said things that were unseemly, but the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "I only left you in charge of my family. Why would you not be pleased to be to me like Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me?" The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Whoever I am a master of, Ali is his master." And he said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "None loves you except a believer, and none hates you except a hypocrite." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) also said: "Whoever wrongs Ali has wronged me." Jabir ibn Abdullah said: "We used to recognize our hypocrites, we, the Ansar, only by their dislike of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)." It is narrated from Abi Abdullah al-Habli, who said: "I entered upon Umm Salamah, and she said to me: 'Is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) being insulted among you?'" I replied: "Far from it, by Allah!" She said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Whoever insults Ali has insulted me.'" And when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) made allies between his companions, with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) present, he did not make him an ally with anyone. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him about this, and he replied: "By the One who sent me with the truth, I did not delay you except for myself, so you are to me like Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me, and you are my brother and my heir." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) when he married her to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "I have married you to a master in this world and a master in the Hereafter." Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrated: "We were at the house of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with a group of migrants and Helpers when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came out to us and said: 'Shall I not inform you of the best among you?'" We replied: "Yes!" He said: "The best among you are the trustworthy and pure. Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, loves those who are humble and righteous."
Then Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "The truth is with him; the truth is with him." Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "The merits and virtues of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) are too numerous to be counted, and Allah, the Almighty, honored him with battling the Khawarij (the Outlaws) and made his sword against them and his fighting them a sword of truth until the Day of Judgment. When Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, Allah cleared him of his murder, and the caliphate passed to him, as Safinah and Abu Bakrah narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): 'The caliphate after me will be thirty years.' So, when Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) had passed, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the fourth caliph, and the people of the city gathered around him, but he refused. They did not leave him alone, so he said: "My pledge will not be in secret, but I will go out to the mosque. Whoever wishes to pledge allegiance to me may do so." He then went out to the mosque, and the people pledged allegiance to him.
