- Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubaydullah al-Jurfī informed us in Baghdad, saying: Muhammad ibn Abdillah ibn Ibrahim al-Shafi'i informed us, who said: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu Na'im narrated to us, Fitr, meaning Ibn Khalifah, narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Rija' from his father, who said: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: We were sitting waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when he came out to us from one of his wives' houses. We stood up with him, and his cloak was draped over him, but one of the straps of his sandal broke. Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took it and stayed behind to fix it while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up, and we stood with him, waiting for him, still standing. Among the people that day were Abu Bakr and Umar.
He said: "Among you is one who will fight for the interpretation of the Qur'an just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr and Umar (peace be upon them) leaned forward in excitement at this, and he continued, "No, but it is the one with the sandal." So I went to him to give him the good news, but he seemed not to take notice, as if it were something he had already heard.
