- .... Imam Ahmad said: Hussein ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Fitr, from Isma'il ibn Rija' ibn Rabiah al-Zubaidi, from his father, who said: I heard Abu Sa'id say: We were sitting waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when he came out to us from the houses of some of his wives. So we stood up with him, and one of his sandals became damaged, and Ali stayed behind to mend it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went on, and we followed him. Then he stopped to wait for him, and we stood with him.
He said: "Some of you will fight for the interpretation of the Quran as I fought for its revelation." They were eager for this, and among them were Abu Bakr and Umar. He continued: "No, but it will be the one mending the sandal." So we came to give him the news, and it seemed as if he had heard it. Ahmad narrated this from Waki' and Abu Usamah, from Fitr ibn Khallaf.
