3783 - Ali ibn Abi Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusai ibn Kilab ibn Murrah ibn Kab ibn Lu'ay al-Qurashi al-Hashimi, cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and his father was Abi Talib ibn Abd Manaf, and it is said that this was his name. The name of his father was Abi Talib, and the name of Hashim was Amr. Ali's mother was Fatimah, the daughter of Asad ibn Hashim: .... Abu al-Qasim Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn Yahya ibn Bush narrated to us in writing, saying: Abu Talib Abd al-Qadir ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Qadir ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar ibn Musa al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Tawzad al-Mawsili narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Khawwas narrated to us, from Afif ibn Salim, from Qatr ibn Khallafah, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Abu Sa'id, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when his sandal strap broke, and he took it to repair it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) walked on,
and he said: "There is among you a man who will fight for the interpretation of the Quran as I fought for its revelation." The people eagerly awaited this, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "But he is the one mending the sandal." So he came and gave us glad tidings of this, but it did not raise his head as if it were something he had already heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." Arslan ibn Baan al-Sufi narrated to us.
