4058 - Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Hafs al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn al-Imam, said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Hafs al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn al-Imam, narrated to us, saying: Yusuf ibn Musa al-Qattan narrated to us, saying: Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Isma'il ibn Rija' al-Zubaidi, from his father, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when he came out to us from the chamber of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and his sandal came apart. He threw it to Ali (peace be upon him), and then sat down and said:
"Indeed, among you is one who will fight for the interpretation of the Qur'an just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will do it." He said: "No." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will do it." He said: "No, rather it will be the one mending the sandal in the chamber." Rija' al-Zubaidi said: Then a man came to Ali in the courtyard and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, was there anything in the story of the sandal?" He replied: "O Allah, indeed, You bear witness that it is something the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was pleased to share with me."
