- Abu al-Muthaffar al-Qushayri narrated to us, saying: Abu Sa'ad narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan narrated to us, and Umm al-Mujtaba narrated to us, who said: It was read to Ibrahim, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Muqri, who both said: From Abi Ya'la, who said: Uthman narrated to us, from Jarir, from al-A'mash, from Isma'il ibn Rija', from his father
from Abu Sa'id, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "Among you there will be one who fights for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr said: "I am that one." Ibn al-Muqri added that he said it, and both said: "O Messenger of Allah!" He replied: "No." Umar said: "I am that one." Ibn al-Muqri added that he said it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "No, but he will be someone who is mending a sandal," and he was, Ibn al-Muqri said:
"And he had given Ali his sandal to mend."- Abu Abdullah al-Farawi narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, saying: Abu Mu'awiya narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Isma'il ibn Rija', from his father
from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "Among you there will be one who fights for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr said: "I am that one, O Messenger of Allah." He replied: "No." Umar said: "Then I am that one, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "No, but one who is mending a sandal." He said that he had given Ali his sandal to mend.
- Al-Bayhaqi said: It was also narrated from Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Ghuniyah, from Isma'il ibn Rija'. Al-Bayhaqi said: Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubaydullah al-Harfiy in Baghdad narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ibrahim al-Shafi'i narrated to me, saying: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, saying: Fitr, meaning ibn Khalifah, from Isma'il ibn Rija', from his father, who said: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when he came out to us from one of his wives' houses. So we stood up and walked with him, and his sandal strap broke. Ali took it and stayed behind to fix it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood, and we stood with him, waiting, while we were still standing, and among the people that day were Abu Bakr and Umar.
He said: "Among you there will be one who fights for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr and Umar looked eagerly at this. He continued: "No, but it is the one mending a sandal." I went to give him glad tidings, but it seemed he did not welcome it, as if it were something he had heard before, and he did not lift his head."- Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, saying: Abu Ali ibn al-Madhhab narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Jafar narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ahmad narrated to me, from my father, from Waki', from Fitr, from Isma'il ibn Rija', from his father,
from Abu Sa'id, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Among you there will be one who fights for its interpretation just as I fought for its revelation." Then Abu Bakr and Umar stood up. He said: "No, but it is one mending a sandal," and Ali was mending his sandal.
- He said: My father narrated to us, saying: Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Fitr, from Isma'il ibn Rija' al-Zubaidi, from his father, who said: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when he came out to us from one of his wives' houses. So we stood up with him, and his sandal broke, and Ali stayed behind to mend it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went on, and we followed him. Then he stood to wait for him, and we stood with him.
He said: "Among you there will be one who fights for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation." We looked expectantly, and among us were Abu Bakr and Umar. He said: "No, but it is one mending a sandal." I came to give him glad tidings, but it seemed he had already heard it."
