The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "There is among you one who will fight on the interpretation of the Quran as I fought on its revelation." Abu Bakr said: "I am he, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." He said: "No." Umar said: "I am he, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." He said: "No, but the one repairing the sandal in the chamber," meaning Ali ibn Abi Talib.

The people turned their attention to Abu Bakr and Umar, but he said: "Not with either of them, but the one repairing the sandal." So we went to Ali and gave him the good news of what he had said, but he did not raise his head at our words, as if it were something he had already heard.
