- Ahmad ibn Hafs narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaiba narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us, from his father, from Isma'il ibn Rija' from his father, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: We were in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came out to us and sat with us, as if there were birds on our heads, and none of us spoke. He then said: "Among you is a man who will fight for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation." Abu Bakr stood up and said: "I am that man, O Messenger of Allah." He replied: "No." Then Umar stood up and said: "I am that man, O Messenger of Allah." He again replied: "No. It will be the one who is busily mending sandals in the stone area, Ali ibn Abi Talib, who has the sandals of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with him, repairing them."
