6176 - Bashar narrated to us, explaining this hadith, from Sheikh Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Ziyad al-Suri narrated to us, from Hamed ibn Yahya al-Balkhi, in Mecca, from Sufyan, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from Qais ibn Abi Hazim, who said: I was in Medina, and while I was walking around in the market, I reached the olive stones and saw a group of people gathered around a horseman who was riding a beast and insulting Ali ibn Abi Talib, with people standing around him. Then Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas approached and stood among them, saying: What is this? They replied: A man is insulting Ali ibn Abi Talib. Sa'd then went forward, and they made way for him until he stood before the horseman and
said: O you, why do you insult Ali ibn Abi Talib? Was he not the first to embrace Islam? Was he not the first to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? Was he not among the most ascetic of people? Was he not the most knowledgeable of people? And he continued to mention until he said: Was he not the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) through his daughter? Was he not the standard-bearer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in his battles? Then he turned toward the Qibla, raised his hands, and said: O Allah, this one insults a friend of Yours, so do not disperse this gathering until You show them Your power. Qais said: By Allah, we did not disperse until his beast sank into the ground, throwing him onto his head in those olive stones, and his skull split open, and he died. This is a hadith narrated authentically according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and they did not include it in their collections.
