Al-Bayhaqi - Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa'l-Athar - Book of Reviving the Dead Land - The Status of a Child with His Parents in Religion
Volume: (9) Page Number: (94)
12476 - Ahmad said: Abu Bakr ibn Furk narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Murrah informed me, from Abu Hamzah from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said: "The first to pray with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was Ali ibn Abi Talib."
12478 - And we have seen a young child observing the prayer and performing it, unaware that he is required to pray and ignorant of faith. Thus, Ali's (peace be upon him) situation was that he was the first to pray, for he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and Khadijah praying, so he acted as they did, just as a child sees his parents praying and prays with them, not understanding the obligation of prayer or faith. It has not been reported to us that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) judged Ali differently than he judged his parents before Ali reached maturity.
12479 - Ahmad said: It has been said that he embraced Islam when he was too young to reach maturity, as he was in many narrations ten years old or older.
12480 - Al-Hasan al-Basri said: Ali embraced Islam when he was fifteen or sixteen years old.

12158 - Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Farj al-Azraq narrated to us, from Abu al-Nadr, from Shu'bah from Amr ibn Murrah, who told me that he heard Abu Hamzah, a man from the Ansar, say that he heard Zayd ibn Arqam say: "The first to pray with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was Ali ibn Abi Talib." I mentioned this to Ibrahim, and he denied it, saying: "It was Abu Bakr."

And Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubaid narrated to us. Muhammad ibn Yunus also narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Zakariya al-Bazzaz narrated to us, saying: Musa ibn Muhammad ibn Ata al-Maqdisi narrated to me, from Abu Abdullah al-Shami about al-Najib ibn al-Sari, who said: Ali (may peace be upon him and him) said in a narration he mentioned: "I preceded them in embracing Islam, a foot (or a step), as a boy, before I had reached the age of maturity." There is no mention of "a foot" in Ibn Abdan's narration, and this is commonly known among people as a statement of Ali (may peace be upon him and him), although it has not reached us with a chain of narration that can be regarded as reliable. The scholars have differed regarding his age on the day he accepted Islam.
