- .... And this hadith has been narrated as a marfu' (raised) statement from Salman from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he said: "The first of this Ummah to arrive at the cistern will be the first of them to embrace Islam: Ali ibn Abi Talib." It is more appropriate that this be raised, for one like him cannot be comprehended by opinion alone.
- .... Ahmad ibn Qasim narrated to us, saying: Qasim ibn Asbagh narrated to us, saying: al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Hisham narrated to us, saying: Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Abu Sa'diq, from Hanj ibn al-Mu'tamir, from Alim al-Kindi, from Salman al-Farsi, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "The first of you to arrive at the cistern and the first of you to embrace Islam will be Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra)." Abu Dawood al-Tayaalsi also narrated, saying: Abu 'Iwanah narrated to us, from Abu Balj, from Amr ibn Maymun.
- .... And concerning this, Ibn Abbas said: "The first to pray with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) after Khadijah was Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra)."
- .... Abd al-Warith ibn Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Qasim ibn Asbagh narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Zuhair ibn Harb narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn Hammad narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Iwanah narrated to us, from Abu Balj, from Amr ibn Maymun, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "Ali ibn Abi Talib was the first of the people to believe after Khadijah (ra)." Abu Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This is an isnad (chain of narration) with no possibility of objection from anyone, due to its authenticity and the trustworthiness of its transmitters. It stands in opposition to what we mentioned from Ibn Abbas in the chapter on Abu Bakr (ra), and the correct view regarding Abu Bakr is that he was the first to publicly declare his Islam. Thus, Mujahid and others have said, "His people prevented him."

- .... Ibn Shihab and Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil and Qatadah and Abu Ishaq said: "The first to embrace Islam among men was Ali." They unanimously agreed that Khadijah was the first to believe in Allah and His Messenger and to affirm him in what he brought, and then Ali believed after her.
- .... Similar was narrated in this regard from Abu Rafiq. Abd al-Warith told us, saying: Qasim told us, saying: Ahmad ibn Zuhair narrated to us, from Abd al-Salam ibn Salih, who said: Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Darawardi narrated to us, saying: Amr, the freedman of Afrifah, narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Kab al-Qurzhi was asked about who was the first to embrace Islam, Ali or Abu Bakr (ra). He replied: "Glory be to Allah! Ali was the first of them to embrace Islam. It was only made to seem otherwise to the people because Ali hid his Islam from Abu Talib, while Abu Bakr openly declared his Islam. There is no doubt that Ali, in our opinion, was the first of them to embrace Islam."
- .... Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Halwani mentioned in his book al-Ma'rifah that he said: Abdullah ibn Salih narrated to us, saying: al-Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Abu al-Aswad Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman, that he heard Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Zubair (ra) both embraced Islam when they were eight years old. This is what Abu al-Aswad used to say: an orphan of Urwah. Ibn Abi Khaythamah also mentioned this, from Qutaybah ibn Sa'id, from al-Layth ibn Sa'd, from Abu al-Aswad. Umar ibn Shabah mentioned it as well, from al-Khuzai, from Ibn Wahb, from al-Layth, from Abu al-Aswad, saying: al-Layth added that they both migrated when they were eighteen years old, and I do not know of anyone who supported the claim of Abu al-Aswad.
- .... Al-Hasan al-Halwani said: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar narrated to us, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, that he said: "Ali (ra) embraced Islam when he was fifteen years old."
- .... And Khalaf ibn Qasim ibn Sahl informed us, saying: Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Tusi narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Siraj narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Mas'ud narrated to us, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, that he said: "Ali was the first to embrace Islam, and he was fifteen or sixteen years old." Ibn Waddah said: "I have never seen anyone more knowledgeable in hadith than Muhammad ibn Mas'ud, nor more knowledgeable in reasoning than Sahnun."
- .... Ibn Ishaq said: "The first male to believe in Allah and His Messenger was Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was then ten years old."
- .... Abu Umar said: "It is said that Ali embraced Islam when he was thirteen years old, and it is also said he was twelve, fifteen, sixteen, ten, or eight years old."
- .... Umar ibn Shabah mentioned from al-Mada'ini, from Ibn Ja'dabah, from Naf'i, from Ibn Umar, that he said: "Ali embraced Islam when he was thirteen years old."

- .... And Abdul Razzaq mentioned from Ma'mar in his Jami' about Qatadah from al-Hasan and others who said: "The first to embrace Islam after Khadijah was Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra), who was fifteen or sixteen years old."
- .... And Ma'mar narrated to us from Uthman al-Khawzi from Muqsim from Ibn Abbas (ra) who said: "The first to embrace Islam was Ali (ra)."
- .... And Abu Zayd Umar ibn Shabba mentioned, saying: Umar ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us, saying: Al-Furat ibn al-Sa'ib narrated to us from Maymun ibn Mahran from Ibn Umar (ra) who said: "Ali ibn Abi Talib embraced Islam when he was thirteen years old and died when he was sixty-three years old." Abu Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This is the most reliable account regarding that, and it has been narrated from Ibn Umar through two good channels.
- .... And it was narrated from Ibn Fudayl from al-Ajlah from Salamah ibn Kuhayl from Hubab ibn al-Juwain al-'Arani who said: "I heard Ali (ra) say: 'I worshiped Allah five years before anyone in this ummah worshiped Him.'"
- .... And Shu'bah narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl from Hubab al-'Arani who said: "I heard Ali say: 'I am the first to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).'"
- .... And Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd said: "I asked Ibn al-Hanifiyah if Abu Bakr was the first to embrace Islam. He replied: 'No.'"
- .... And Muslim al-Malai narrated from Anas ibn Malik who said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was informed (of his prophethood) on a Monday and prayed on Tuesday."
- .... And Zayd ibn Arqam said: "The first to believe in Allah after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was Ali ibn Abi Talib."
- .... And the hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam was narrated from various sources mentioned by Nasai, Asad ibn Musa, and others. Among them, Abd al-Warith narrated to us, saying: Qasim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Zuhair narrated to us, Ibn al-Ja'd narrated to us from Shu'bah who said: "Amr ibn Murrah informed me, saying: I heard Abu Hamzah al-Ansari say: I heard Zayd ibn Arqam say: 'The first to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).'"
- .... And Abd al-Warith narrated to us, saying: Qasim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Zuhair ibn Harb narrated to us, from his father who said: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Yahya ibn al-Ash'ath narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Iyās from Afif al-Kindi, from his father and grandfather, who said to me: "I was a merchant and came to perform Hajj. I visited Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib to buy some merchandise from him, for he was a merchant. By Allah, I was with him at Mina when a man emerged from a nearby encampment, looked at the sun, and, seeing it had moved, stood up to pray. Then a woman came out from the same encampment and stood behind him to pray. Afterward, a boy who was approaching puberty came out from that encampment and stood with them to pray. I said to Abbas: 'Who is this?' Abbas replied: 'This is Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, my nephew.' I asked: 'Who is this woman?' He said: 'This is his wife, Khadijah bint Khuwailid.' I asked: 'Who is this boy?' He said: 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, his cousin.' I said: 'What is this they are doing?' He said: 'Praying, and he claims to be a prophet. Only his wife and this boy, his cousin, follow him in what he claims. He believes that the treasures of Kisra and Qaiser will be opened to him.'" Afif would say: "He could have embraced Islam later, and his Islam was good. If Allah had granted me Islam that day, I would have been the second with Ali." We have mentioned this hadith through various chains in the chapter on Afif al-Kindi in this book, and all praise is due to Allah.
- .... And Ali (ra) said: "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) many times, and no one prayed with him except me and Khadijah." They all agreed that he prayed in both qiblahs, emigrated, and witnessed Badr, al-Hudaybiyyah, and all other significant events, and that he showed great valor at Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and Khaybar. He was a source of strength in those events and held a position of great honor among them."
