Ibn Abi Ya'la - Tabaqat al-Hanabilah - Chapter on the Letter Meem
Muhammad ibn Mansur ibn Dawud ibn Ibrahim Abu Ja'far al-Abid, known as al-Tusi

- Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Abanusi narrated to us, saying: Abu Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Kattani narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Husayn ibn Umar ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi al-Ashnani narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan al-Harbi narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Mansur al-Tusi narrated to me, saying: I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say that no one has had more virtues narrated about them than Ali ibn Abi Talib. He said, and I heard Muhammad ibn Mansur say we were with Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and a man said to him: O Abu Abdullah, what do you say about this hadith that reports Ali saying: "I am the divider of the Fire"? He replied: And what do you find unacceptable about this? Did we not narrate that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Ali: "None loves you except a believer, and none hates you except a hypocrite"? We said: Yes. He said: So where is the believer? We said: In Paradise. He said: And where is the hypocrite? We said: In the Fire. He said: Then Ali is the divider of the Fire.

- .... And he said regarding Ali's statement: "I am the divider of the Fire," narrated by Abdullah ibn Dawud from al-A'mash from Musa ibn Tarif, that he intended that people are two groups: a group with me, and they are on guidance, and a group with Ali, and they are in misguidance, like birds of prey. So, I am the divider of the Fire, with one half in Paradise with me and the other half in it. And "divider" is in the sense of one who divides, similar to terms like companion, eater, and drinker.

- .... And in the hadith of Ali: "I am the divider of the Fire" he meant that people are of two groups: one group is with me, and they are on guidance, and the other group is against me, and they are in misguidance. So half will be with me in Paradise, and half against me in the Fire. "Divider" (Qasim) is a form (Fa'il) meaning one who divides (Muf'ial), like "companion" (Jalis) and "converser" (Samir). It is said that he meant the Khawarij by this, and others say all who fought him.

- .... He is the Commander of the Faithful, the Pupil of Religion, the Glorious One of the Emigrants, the Chosen One of the Hashimites, the Slayer of the Unbelievers, the Rebels, the Oppressors, the Apostates, and the Unretreating. He was a formidable force, striking with the strength of every challenger, with the Staff of Might, a peer of Ja'far al-Tayyar the Arbiter of Heaven and Hell, the wielding commander of the vast army, striking the faces of silver and luster with the hand of contempt. And he was Abū Turāb, the Master of the Age, dusted with dirt, the leader of the battalion, the scripture, the prayer niche, the spears, the stabs, the strikes, and the scholar of reckoning, without reckoning. He was the provider for the hungry with handfuls, like answers, resolving the intractable with correct replies, the host of eagles and wolves with the decisive sword, defeating the factions and dividing their spoils.

1 - Muwaffaq ibn Ahmad al-Khwarizmi al-Makki narrated: With his chain of transmission from Naf'i, from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Ali: "On the Day of Resurrection, you, O Ali, will be brought with a couch of light, and on your head will be a crown whose light will illuminate and almost blind the eyes of the people in the gathering." Then the call will come from Allah, Glorious and Majestic be He: "Where is the successor of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah?" You will reply, "Here I am." Then the caller will announce, "Enter those who love you into Paradise, and cast those who oppose you into the Fire, for you are the divider of Paradise and Hell."
2 - Ibn al-Maghazili al-Shafi'i narrated: With his chain of transmission from Ibn Mas'ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Ali, you are the divider of Paradise and Hell. You will knock on the gate of Paradise and your friends will enter it without reckoning."
3 - In Jawahir al-Aqdain: Al-Daraqutni narrated from Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathila al-Kinani that Ali (peace be upon him) said in a long narration about the Shura: In it, he mentioned that he said to the people of the Shura: "I ask you by Allah, is there anyone among you who the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to, 'You are the divider of Hell and Paradise, except me'?" They replied, "O Allah, no."
5 - In the Tafsir attributed to the Imams from the Ahl al-Bayt, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Ali, you are the divider of Paradise and Hell. You will say to Hell, 'This is mine, and this is yours.'"
6 - From Abu Basir, from al-Baqir, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "How will it be for you, O Ali, when you stand on the brink of Hell, with the Bridge (Sirat) extended, and you say to the people, 'Cross,' and to Hell, 'This is mine, and this is yours'?"
7 - In al-Manaqib from Muhammad ibn Humran, from Ja'far al-Sadiq, in the interpretation of the verse: {Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever} (Qaf 50:24), he said, "On the Day of Resurrection, Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and Ali (peace be upon him) will stand on the Bridge and a caller will announce, 'O Muhammad, O Ali, throw into Hell every disbeliever of your prophethood, O Muhammad, and obstinate against your ولایتی, O Ali.'"
8 - From Ja'far al-Sadiq, from his forefathers, from Ali (peace be upon him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: "When the people are gathered in one place, I, along with you, O Ali, will be on that day to the right of the Throne. Then our Lord will say to me and you, 'Throw into Hell those who hated you and denied you'". It was also narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri to this effect.
9 - The author of al-Arba'in narrated from Ishaq ibn Muhammad al-Nakha'i that some scholars from the people of Kufa came to al-A'mash during his illness and said to him: "You used to narrate virtues of so-and-so, so do not stop narrating them now." Al-A'mash replied: "Support me with a chain," so they supported him. He said: "Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji narrated to me from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will say, 'On the Day of Resurrection, Allah, the Exalted, will say to Ali ibn Abi Talib, "Admit into the Fire those who hated you both, and admit into Paradise those who loved you both"'. This is what His statement means: {Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever} (Qaf 50:24), meaning those who disbelieved in my prophethood and were obstinate against Ali's obedience."
10 - In al-Manaqib from Abu al-Tufayl Amir ibn Wathila, the last of the companions to die, by consensus, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Ali, you are my successor, your war is my war, your peace is my peace, and you are the Imam and father of the eleven Imams who are infallible and pure. Among them is the Mahdi who will fill the earth with justice and fairness. Woe to those who hate them, O Ali! If a man loves you and your children for the sake of Allah, Allah will resurrect him with you and your children, and you will be with me in the highest ranks. You are the divider of Paradise and Hell, admitting your lovers into Paradise and casting your enemies into the Fire."
11 - In Uyun akhbar from Abu al-Salt al-Harawi, who said: Al-Ma'mun said one day to Ali al-Ridha ibn Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him): "O Abu al-Hasan, tell me about your grandfather, the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). In what way is he the divider of Paradise and Hell, and in what sense? I have been pondering this greatly." Al-Ridha (peace be upon him) replied: "Did you not hear from your ancestors from Abdullah ibn Abbas, that he said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, "The love of Ali is faith, and the hatred of him is disbelief"'?" He said, "Yes." Al-Ridha (peace be upon him) continued, "Since Paradise is for the believers and Hell is for the disbelievers, the division of Paradise and Hell will be based on love and hatred of him, so he is the divider of Paradise and Hell."
- .... The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Ali, you are the divider of Paradise and Hell on the Day of Resurrection. You will say to Hell, 'This is mine, and this is yours.'"
12 - In al-Shifa in the chapter on miracles regarding what he witnessed of the unseen: "Ali is the divider of Paradise and Hell, admitting his friends into Paradise and his enemies into Hell." And it is attributed to Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah be pleased with him):
"His love is Paradise, *the divider of Fire and Paradise."
13 - Muwaffaq ibn Ahmad narrated: From al-Hasan al-Basri, from Ibn Mas'ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "On the Day of Resurrection, Ali ibn Abi Talib will sit on the Fountain (Firdaws), a mountain that rises above Paradise, with the Throne of the Lord of the Worlds above him. From its rim, the rivers of Paradise will burst forth and spread throughout Paradise. Ali will be sitting on a chair of light, and between his hands will flow Tasnim, and no one will cross the Bridge (Sirat) except that they will have a document of fidelity to Ali and the family of his house [overseeing Paradise], entering his friends into Paradise and casting his enemies into the Fire."
14 - In al-Manaqib from Muqatil ibn Suleiman, from Ja'far al-Sadiq, from his ancestors, from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Ali, you are to me in the position of Shu'ayb to Adam, in the position of Sam to Noah, in the position of Isaac to Abraham, as Allah, the Exalted, said: {And Abraham instructed his sons in this, and so did Jacob} (Surah al-Baqarah 2:132), and in the position of Aaron to Moses, in the position of Simon to Jesus. You are my successor and heir, you are the foremost among them in peace, the most knowledgeable among them, the most patient among them, the most courageous of them in heart, the most generous of them in forgiving, and you are the Imam of my community and the divider of Paradise and Hell by your love, distinguishing the righteous from the wicked and making a distinction between the believers, hypocrites, and disbelievers."

- .... Ali ibn Raba'iyya said: I heard Ali say: "I am the divider of Hell and Paradise. I will say to Hell, 'This is mine, and this is yours.'"
56 - Al-Daraqutni narrated that Ali said to the six who Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed to consult amongst themselves regarding leadership: "I recite to you an extensive statement, part of which is: I urge you by Allah, is there anyone among you to whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'O Ali, you are the divider of Hell and Paradise on the Day of Resurrection, other than me?'" They replied, 'O Allah, no.'
57 - And its meaning is what Antar ibn Shaddad narrated from Ali al-Ridha: that he (peace be upon him) said, "O Ali, you are the divider of Paradise and Hell, and on the Day of Resurrection, you will say to Hell, 'This is mine, and this is yours.'"
58 - Ibn al-Sammak narrated that Abu Bakr said to Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'No one will pass over the Bridge except those for whom Ali has written permission to pass.'"
15 - And in Gharar al-Hikam: "Verily, (There is no god but Allah) has conditions, and I and my descendants are among its conditions. I am the divider of Hell and the guardian of Paradise, the owner of the Pond, the owner of the Heights, and there is no Imam from us, the People of the House, except that he is aware of the people of my wilayah." This is based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted: {You are only a warner, and for every people, there is a guide} (Surah ar-Ra'd 13:7). "And I am the leader of the believers, and wealth is the leader of the wicked. Whoever obeys his Imam has indeed obeyed his Lord." End of Gharar al-Hikam.

Thus, there has come a widely disseminated report regarding him: "He is theSplitter of Paradise and Hellfire," and Abu Ubayd al-Harawi mentioned in al-Jam' bayna al-Gharibayn that a group of scholars of Arabic interpreted this, saying: Because his lover is from the inhabitants of Paradise and his hater is from the inhabitants of Hell, he is, in this regard, like a splitter of Paradise and Hell. Abu Ubayd said: And others than these stated that he is, in truth, a splitter of them himself, admitting some to Paradise and others to Hell. - .... Among them is his saying: (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "I am the Divider of the Fire." Ibn Qutaybah said: He meant that people are of two groups: one group is with me, and they are guided, and the other group is against me, and they are in misguidance, like the Kharijites. Ibn Qutaybah did not dare to say, and like the people of Syria; he seemed to be refraining. Then, indeed, Allah caused him to speak the truth he refrained from mentioning, saying, to complete the statement, "So I am the Divider of the Fire, one half in Paradise with me and one half in the Fire." He said that "Divider" is in the meaning of "Distributor," like "Companion" and "Eater" and "Drinker." I say: Abu Ubaid al-Harawi mentioned this statement in his work al-Jam' bayna al-Gharibayn. He said that some people stated he did not mean what was mentioned but rather intended to be the Divider of the Fire and Paradise on the Day of Judgment in reality, distributing the ummah and saying, "This is for Paradise, and this is for the Fire."
