Al-Azhari narrates to me, saying: Al-Muhammad ibn al-Muzhafar narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Thabit narrated to us, saying: I found in my grandfather Muhammad ibn Thabit's book that Ash'ath ibn al-Hasan al-Sulami narrated to us from Ja'far al-Ahmar, from Yunus ibn Arqam, from Ubayn from Khaleed al-Asri, who said: "I heard the Commander of the Faithful, Ali, say on the day of Nahrawan: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded me to fight the Nakithin (the Those Who Turned Back), the Marqin (the Those Who Emerged), and the Qasitin (the Those Who Injustice).'"

- Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abdullah al-Muqri' narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Mutairi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Mu'allim narrated to us from al-Mu'alla ibn Abd al-Rahman in Baghdad, saying: Shareek narrated to us from Sulayman ibn Mehran al-Amash, who said: Ibrahim narrated to us from Alqamah and al-Aswad, both of whom said: We went to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari when he was returning from Siffin and said to him: O Abu Ayyub, Allah has honored you with the descent of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and with the coming of his she-camel, a favor from Allah and an honor to you, until it knelt at your door before the people. Then you came with your sword on your shoulder, striking those who bear witness that there is no god but Allah. He said: O this, the one who goes ahead does not lie to his people and that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded us to fight three groups along with Ali: to fight the Nakithin (those who broke the pledge), the Qasitin (those who were unjust), and the Marikin (those who deviated). As for the Nakithin, we confronted them at the Battle of the Camel, Talha and Zubair. As for the Qasitin, this is our return from them, meaning Muawiya and Amr. As for the Marikin, they are the people of the turbans, the people of the light armors, the people of the date palms, and the people of the Nahrawand. By Allah, I do not know where they are, but there must be a fight against them, if Allah wills.

- .... As for the group that broke their oath (an-Nakithin), they are the companions of al-Jamal, and as for the group that distorted (al-Qasitin), they are the companions of Siffin, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called them al-Qasitin. As for the group that went astray (al-Marqin), they are the companions of Nahrawan. We are alluding with our statement that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called them al-Qasitin to his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) words: "You will fight, after me, the Nakithin, the Qasitin, and the Marqin." This hadith is one of the signs of his prophethood, blessings of Allah be upon him and his holy progeny, because it is a clear prophecy of the unseen that does not allow for ambiguity or deception.
- .... His son al-Hasan said: O Commander of the Faithful, did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) instruct you in advance regarding the matter of these people? He replied: No, but the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded me with every truth, and it is from the truth that I fight the Nakithin, the Qasitin, and the Marqin.
- .... It has been established from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he said to him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "You will fight, after me, the Nakithin, the Qasitin, and the Marqin," so the Nakithin were the companions of al-Jamal because they broke their pledge to him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the Qasitin were the people of Shaam at Siffin, and the Marqin were the Khawarij at Nahrawan.

- .... O mother of Salamah, listen and bear witness that this is my brother, both in this world and the Hereafter, and the one who will carry my standard in this world and the Banner of Praise tomorrow on the Day of Resurrection. This is Ali, my successor and the judge of my enemies, the defender against the hypocrites at my pond, O mother of Salamah: this is Ali, the master of the Muslims, the imam of the righteous, and the leader of those with shining foreheads who will fight the Nākithīn, the Qāsiteen, and the Māriqīn.
- .... Ali received a mandate from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) regarding the fighting of the Nākithīn, the Qāsiteen, and the Māriqīn, as narrated by al-Bazzar and al-Awsat.
- .... And Ibn Mas'ud narrated from a raised position that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went to the home of Umm Salamah, and Ali came. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Umm Salamah, this is Ali; he is the one who will fight the Nākithīn, the Qāsiteen, and the Māriqīn after me. Both al-Hakim and al-Bukhari narrated this.
