- Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubayd Allah al-Jurfyi narrated to us in Baghdad, saying: Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim al-Shafi'i narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: Abu Na'im narrated to us, saying: Fitr, meaning Ibn Khalifah, narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Raju' from his father, who said: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: We were sitting, waiting for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when he came out to us from one of his wives' houses. We stood with him, and as he was walking, one of his sandals became untied. Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took it and stayed behind to fix it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood, and we stood with him, waiting for him while we were standing. Among the people that day were Abu Bakr and Umar.
He said: "Indeed, among you is one who will fight on the interpretation of the Quran, just as I fought on its revelation." Abu Bakr and Umar (peace be upon them) both eagerly inclined toward this. He continued: "No, but it is the one with the sandal." So I approached him to give him the good news, but he seemed not to lift his head in acknowledgment, as if it were something he had already heard.
