4679 - Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shaybani informed us in Kufa from the original of his book, saying: Ahmad ibn Hazim ibn Abi Ghurzah narrated to us, saying: Abu Ghassan narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, saying: al-A'mash narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Ruja' from his father from Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn Abi Ghurzah said, and Ubeydullah ibn Musa also narrated to us, saying: Fitr ibn Khalifah narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Ruja' from his father from Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when his sandal broke, and Ali stayed behind to mend it. He walked a little and then said: 'Indeed, among you is one who will fight for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation.' The people, including Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), eagerly looked forward to this. Abu Bakr said, 'I am he.' He said, 'No.' Umar said, 'I am he.' He said, 'No, but the one mending the sandal,' referring to Ali." So we went to him and gave him the good news, but he did not raise his head as if he had heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). This is a sound hadith on the criteria of the Two Shaykhs, and they did not narrate it.
