If he dies rather he is killed, you will turn back upon your heels

Hadith No: 1
Ahmad ibn Hanbal - Fada'il al-Sahabah - Virtues of Imam Ali (peace be upon him)
Among the virtues of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) from the hadith of Abu Bakr ibn Malik narrated from his teachers, except for Abdullah:

1110 - Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abdul Aziz narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Mansur and Ali ibn Muslim and others said: Amr ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, saying: Isbat narrated to us from Samak, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Ali used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: {So if he dies or is killed, you will turn on your heels} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144). And by Allah, we will not turn on our heels after Allah has guided us. And whether he dies or is killed, I will surely fight for what he fought for until I die. By Allah, I am indeed his brother, his successor, his cousin, his heir, and one who is more rightful to him than anyone else."

4691 - Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Hani narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Umar ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, from Asbat ibn Nasr, from Samak ibn Harb, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (ra), who said: Ali used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Allah says: {So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144) And by Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us. And I swear, whether he dies or is killed, I will fight for what he fought for until I die. By Allah, I am surely his brother, successor, and cousin, and the heir to his knowledge. Who is more deserving of it than me?"

14765 - Ibn Abbas reported that Ali used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, says: {So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144) and by Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us." And he continued, "If he dies or is killed, I will surely fight for what he fought for until I die." By Allah, I am indeed his brother, his supporter, his cousin, and his heir. Who is more deserving of him than me?" This was narrated by al-Tabarani, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

8396 - Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Abdullah al-Nisaburi and Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Hakim (with Muhammad's wording) said: Amr ibn Talha narrated to us, who said: Asbat narrated to us, from Samak, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Ali used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Allah says: {So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?} (Ali Imran 3:144). By Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us." And he would add, "If he dies or is killed, I will surely fight for what he fought for until he dies." And by Allah, I am his brother, his successor, his heir, his cousin, and more deserving of him than anyone else."

Al-Tabarani - al-Mu'jam al-Kabir - the lineage of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may he be pleased with him) who witnessed Badr was the son of Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusai ibn Kilab ibn Murra ibn Kab ibn Lu'ay ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr ibn Malik. He was nicknamed Abu al-Hasan. - And what is narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may he be pleased with him) is as follows:

176 - Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, saying: Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from Samak ibn Harb, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Ali (peace be upon him) used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, says: {So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144), and by Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us." And he would continue, "Indeed, if he dies or is killed, I will surely fight for what he fought for until I die. By Allah, I am his brother, his successor, his cousin, and his heir. Who is more entitled to him than me?"

134 - Al-Husayn narrated to us, saying: Al-Fadl ibn Sahal narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Talhah narrated to us, saying: Asbat narrated to us, from Samak, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Ali (may peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Indeed, Allah says: {So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels?} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144) And by Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us." And he would say, "If that one dies or is killed, I swear I will fight for what he fought for until I die. And by Allah, I am indeed his brother, his successor, and the son of his uncle."

He narrated from the texts four hundred and more, not including the chains of transmission. Among the notable and strange aspects of his narration are:

357 - Sulayman ibn Ahmad narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, saying: Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from Samak ibn Harb, from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that Ali used to say during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (sa): "Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic be He, says: {So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?"} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144) And by Allah, we will not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us. And by Allah, by Allah, even if he dies or is killed, I will certainly fight for what he fought for until I die." And by Allah, I am indeed his brother, his heir, and the son of his uncle, and who is more deserving of him than me.
