- Eighth: His statement to the sun, "You are commanded": It is possible that Allah, the Exalted, created in it some ability to discern and understand, making it suitable for such communication. It is also possible that this was a way of recalling that to the mind to establish that it cannot change from its nature except by a breaking of the usual order from Allah, the Exalted, in response to the prayer of His Prophet, not that it was meant as a direct address to it
And for this reason he said immediately afterward: "O Allah, confine it to me," and what is meant by this could be an expression of what the situation warrants, as in his saying: "My camel complained to me of the length of the journey ... a beautiful patience, for we are both tested."
And his remark, "(something)" is in the accusative, indicating the nature of a verbal noun. Al-Qadi Iyad said: There is a disagreement regarding the mention of the sun's confinement here. It was said: It was sent back on its way. Others said: It stopped but did not return. And some said: Its movement slowed. He noted that all of this is from the miracles of Prophethood.
Ibn Battal said, after recounting the three opinions: The third is the most likely.
Al-Qadi Iyad also narrated that our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had the sun confined for him twice:
- One of them was
on the Day of the Trench when they were preoccupied with the afternoon prayer until the sun had set, then Allah, the Exalted, returned it to him so he could pray the afternoon prayer. This was mentioned by al-Tahtawi, who said its narrators were trustworthy.
- The second was the morning after the Night Journey when he was awaiting the caravan that he had been informed would arrive with the sunrise. Yunus ibn Bakir mentioned this in his additions to the Sirah of Ibn Ishaq. I say, and al-Tabarani narrated in his Musnad al-Awsat with a good chain from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded the sun to delay for an hour of the day. Al-Tabarani also narrated in his Musnad al-Kabir with a good chain
from Asma bint Umays that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the noon prayer at al-Suhbah, then sent Ali on an errand. He returned, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had prayed the afternoon prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) rested his head in Ali's lap and slept, not waking him until the sun had set. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Allah, your servant Ali has confined himself for the sake of his Prophet," and Allah returned the sun to him. Asma said: The sun rose, appearing to him, until it stood over the mountains and the earth. Ali then performed ablution and prayed the afternoon prayer, and then it set." This took place at al-Suhbah.
-
In another narration: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in a state where revelation was descending upon him, and he was nearly overcome. One day, Allah, the Exalted, lowered it upon him while he was in Ali's lap. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then said to him: "Did you pray the afternoon prayer?" Ali replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." So he prayed to Allah, and the sun was returned to him until he prayed the afternoon prayer. Asma said: I saw the sun rise again after it had set, when it was returned, until he prayed the afternoon prayer.
