- .... He said: O people, I asked you both in secret and in public about your hopes, but I did not find you just towards either of these two men; one is Ali and the other is Uthman. Then he called out: Come to me, O Ali. Ali stood up and went to him beneath the pulpit, and Abd al-Rahman took his hand and said: Are you willing to pledge allegiance to me on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the actions of Abu Bakr and Umar? Ali replied: O Allah, no, but [I will pledge] to the best of my ability and effort in that. Then he released his hand and said: Come to me, O Uthman. Uthman stood up and went to him, and he took his hand and said: Are you willing to pledge allegiance to me on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the actions of Abu Bakr and Umar? Uthman replied: O Allah, yes. Then he raised his head to the ceiling of the mosque, his hand in Uthman's, and said: O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, I have removed whatever is in my neck regarding this and placed it on the neck of Uthman.

- .... Abd al-Rahman said: "I have considered and consulted, so do not make this, O you group, a means against yourselves," and he called Ali and said: "You have Allah's covenant and pledge to act according to the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, and the conduct of the two caliphs who came before you." Ali replied: "I hope to do so and to act to the best of my knowledge and ability." Then he called Uthman and said to him similarly to what he had said to Ali. He then said: "A patient endurance, and Allah is the Best Helper against what you describe."

- .... So Abdul Rahman strove hard during those days and then ascended the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and stood on the step where the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to sit. He paused there for a long time, making a lengthy supplication, and then said: O people, I have asked you in secret and in public, doubly and individually, and I have not found anyone who you would consider equal to one of these two men. Come to me, O Ali. So Ali stood up and went to him, standing under the pulpit. Abdul Rahman took his hand and said: Are you willing to pledge allegiance to me on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the actions of Abu Bakr and Umar? He replied: O Allah, no, but I will do so to the best of my ability and power. Then he released his hand and said: Rise, O Uthman. Uthman said: Are you willing to pledge allegiance to me on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the actions of Abu Bakr and Umar? He replied: O Allah, yes. Then he raised his head to the ceiling of the mosque, his hand in the hand of Uthman, and said: O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, hear and bear witness! O Allah, I have made what is in my responsibility regarding this matter to be in the responsibility of Uthman.

- .... When Umar died and they gathered for consultation, he asked them to excuse him from it on the condition that they choose a man from among them, and they did so. He stayed for three days and secluded himself with Ali ibn Abi Talib and said to him, "May Allah’s burden be upon you, if you take on this matter, that you govern us by the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Prophet, and the practices of Abu Bakr and Umar." Ali replied, "I will govern you by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet as long as I am able." Then he secluded himself with Uthman and said to him, "May Allah’s burden be upon you, if you take on this matter, that you govern us by the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Prophet, and the practices of Abu Bakr and Umar." Uthman replied, "I can govern you by the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Prophet, and the practices of Abu Bakr and Umar." Then he secluded himself with Ali again and repeated his first statement, and Ali responded as he had before. Then he secluded himself with Uthman and said to him the same as his first statement, and Uthman replied as he had before. Then he secluded himself with Ali again and said the same as his first statement. Ali replied, "The Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet do not require anyone else to assist them. Are you striving to divert this matter from me?" He secluded himself with Uthman again and reiterated his words, and Uthman answered him with that same response and clapped his hands together.

- .... As for Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf al-Zuhri, he is a man regarding whom both scholars and laypeople unanimously agree that he was one of the six whom Umar appointed to consult together. And at the time of his death, he said to the five: "I gift you my share and the share of my cousin, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, on the condition that I be the one to choose the imam from among you." And they did that. Then he reviewed the four remaining ones, who were Ali, Uthman, Talhah, and al-Zubair, and chose Ali and Uthman from the four. When he wanted to select one of the two, he said to Ali (peace be upon him): "If I choose you for this matter, will you govern us with the manner of Abu Bakr and Umar?" Ali (peace be upon him) replied: "Rather, I will govern you with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." So he left him and went to Uthman." He then said: "If I choose you, will you govern us with the manner of Abu Bakr and Umar?" Uthman replied: "Yes," so he chose him and pledged allegiance to him.
