16 - And in al-Manaqib: with a chain of narration (isnad) from Ja'far al-Sādiq, from his father, from his grandfather Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them), who said: It reached Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that one of her freedmen was belittling Ali (peace be upon him). So she sent for him, and he came to her. She said to him: O my son, shall I tell you a حديث (narrative) I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? He (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said (to her): O Umm Salamah, listen and bear witness, this is Ali, my brother in this world and the Hereafter, the bearer of my banner in this world, and the bearer of the Banner of Praise tomorrow on the Day of Resurrection. This is Ali, my successor (wasiyyi) and the one who will judge my enemies (qādi 'idāti), the protector against the hypocrites at my pond (dhā'id).
O Umm Salamah: Ali is the master of the Muslims, the Imam of the God-fearing (muttaqīn), and the leader of those with shining foreheads (ghurr al-muhajjilīn), and the fighter against the renegades (nākiṭīn), the oppressors (qāsiṭīn), and the transgressors (mārqīn).
