215 - Abu Mansur Shahdar ibn Shirwayh ibn Shahdar al-Daylami narrated to me this - in a letter he wrote to me from Hamadan - saying: Abdus narrated to us, writing, from the noble Abu Talib al-Mufaddal ibn Muhammad ibn Tahir al-Ja'fari in Isfahan, from the hafiz Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Musa ibn Marduyah ibn Furak al-Isfahani, who said: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Husayn narrated to me, Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Walid al-Aqili narrated to me, Quthm ibn Abi Qatadah al-Harani narrated to us, and Waki' narrated to us, from Khalid al-Nu'wa, from al-Asbagh ibn Nabatah, who said: When Zayd ibn Suhhan was struck on the day of Jamal, Ali approached him while he still had some life left. The Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), stood over him, and he was in a state of distress. He said, "May Allah have mercy on you, O Zayd, for by Allah, we did not know you except as one who was easy to be with and of great assistance." Zayd then raised his head to him and said, "And you, may Allah have mercy on you, for by Allah, I did not know you except as one who is knowledgeable of Allah and aware of His signs. By Allah, I did not fight alongside you out of ignorance but I heard Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman say, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, "Ali is the Commander of the Righteous and the Fighter of the Wicked, supported is he who heeds him, and forsaken is he who forsakes him."" And indeed, the truth is with him, and indeed, the truth is with him, following him. So turn with him."

- .... Then he said: And Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn Ahmad al-Faqih narrated to us .... I say: It is also possible that this statement is from the words of al-Thalabi, while Abdullah ibn Abbas was sitting on the edge of Zamzam, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, when a man approached, wearing a turban. Ibn Abbas would only say, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said," and then the man would say, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said." Ibn Abbas then said: I ask you by Allah, who are you? He uncovered the turban from his face and said: O people, whoever knows me has known me, and whoever does not know me, I am Jundub ibn Junadah al-Badri, Abu Dharr al-Ghafari. I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say this with these two things, or else be silent, and I saw him with these two things, or else be blind as he said: Ali is the leader of the righteous and the fighter of the disbelievers, supported is he who aids him, and forsaken is he who betrays him.

- .... So what do you think of the origin of him raising his hands, his branch, at the threshold of the House of Honor, in the realm of might, both in knowledge and action, flowing over the pages of his qualities in the registers of pride, scarcely any? He is the Imam Baheer, the Sea Zakheer, the Sword Baatir, the Moon Zaahir, Leader of the Righteous and Fighter of the Unbelievers, Divider of Fire and Paradise, and Imam of the Good, the Master of Positions and Virtues, the Chosen one, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).
