1108 - Abdullah narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Hamani narrated to us, saying: Sharik narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhali ibn Amr, from Ubad ibn Abd Allah, from Ali; and Abdullah ibn Abd Allah narrated to us, from Abu Khaythamah, who said: Aswad ibn Amir narrated to us, who said: Sharik narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhali ibn Amr, from Amr, from Ubad ibn Abd Allah al-Asadi, from Ali, who said: When Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {And warn your nearest relatives} (Surah al-Shu'ara, 26:214), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called men from his family, and there were some among them who would be eating a small goat, and some who would be drinking from a cup. He presented to them a man, and they ate until they were full.
Then he said to them: "Who will guarantee my religion and my promises for me, be with me in paradise, and be my successor among my family?" He offered this to the men of his family, and Ali said: "I will." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "Ali will settle my debts and fulfill my promises." And the wording of the hadith differs with al-Hamani, and some of it is similar to the hadith of Abu Khaythamah.
