- Abu al-Qasim also narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Fadl ibn al-Baqal narrated to me, saying: Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran narrated to me, saying: Abu Umr ibn al-Samak narrated to us, saying: Hanbal ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abu Ghassan Malik ibn Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Zuhayr
narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq said: Abdul Rahman ibn Khalid asked Qutham ibn Abbas, "In what way did Ali inherit from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that you do not?" He replied, "He was the first of us to join him and the most steadfast with him."- Abu Abdullah al-Husayn ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us, saying: Abu Uthman Said ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to me, saying: Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Hamed ibn Muhammad al-Isbahani narrated to me, saying: Umar ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Malik narrated to me, from his father, who said: I asked Yahya ibn Ma'in about Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, "Did he meet Qutham?" He replied, "Yes, on the way to Khurasan." I said to him, "Al-Nufayli narrated to us from Zuhayr
from Abu Ishaq, saying: It was said to Qutham, 'In what way did Ali inherit from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He replied, 'He was the first of us to join him and the most steadfast with him.'" I said, "What does this mean, that Ali inherited?" He replied, "I do not know, except that Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us and mentioned the hadith of Mujalid ibn Sa'id. What is meant by the inheritance here is knowledge, as evidence that Abbas was closer to him in kinship, but Ali was more devoted to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and had been in his companionship longer."
