Hadith No: 1
Al-Hakim al-Nisapouri - Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn
Book of Knowledge of the Companions - Ali was the first of us to join him and the most steadfast among us in circumstances
Volume: (3) - Page Number: (125)
4690 - Abu al-Nadr Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Osman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi narrated to us, saying: al-Nufayli narrated to us, saying: Zuhair narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq narrated, and Osman said that Ali ibn Hakim al-Awdi and Amr ibn Aun al-Wasiti also narrated to us, saying: Sharik ibn Abdullah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: "I asked Quthm ibn al-Abbas, 'How did Ali inherit from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) without you?' He replied, 'Because he was the first of us to join him and the most steadfast among us in circumstances.'" This is a hadith with a sound chain of narration that they did not include in their collections. I heard the chief judge, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Salih al-Hashimi, say: I heard Abu Umar al-Qadi say: I heard Isma'il ibn Ishaq al-Qadi say, and he was told of Quthm's statement: "A worthy inheritor inherits only by blood relation or by allegiance, and there is no disagreement among the people of knowledge that a cousin does not inherit in the presence of an uncle." Thus, it has become evident through this consensus that Ali inherited knowledge from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) over them, and the validity of what the judge mentioned.

He replied, 'He was the first of us to join him and the most steadfast with him.'" I said, "What does this mean, that Ali inherited?" He replied, "I do not know, except that Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us and mentioned the hadith of Mujalid ibn Sa'id. What is meant by the inheritance here is knowledge, as evidence that Abbas was closer to him in kinship, but Ali was more devoted to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and had been in his companionship longer."

It was said that he narrated from Abu Ishaq (peace be upon him) from Khalid ibn Qaym ibn al-Abbas: that it was said to him, "What is it with Ali that he inherited from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) while your grandfather did not, although he is his uncle?" He replied, "Indeed, Ali was the first of us to follow him and the most steadfast with him." Another account states that he narrated from Abu Ishaq (peace be upon him) who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid Quthm ibn al-Abbas was asked, "From where did Ali inherit from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" .... and he mentioned something similar. Al-Nasa'i narrated this hadith from him in al-Khasa'is in both forms.
