- .... Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: Isma'il ibn Musa ibn Umar al-Rumi narrated to us, saying: Sharik narrated to us from Kahil, Suwayd ibn Ghaflah, from al-Sunabihi, from Ali, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I am the City of Wisdom, and Ali is its Gate." Then he said: This hadith is strange. He added that some narrated this hadith from Ibn Abbas. I say that Suwayd ibn Sa'id narrated it from Sharik, from Salamah, from al-Sunabihi, from Ali, raised (marfu') to the Prophet: "I am the City of Knowledge, and Ali is its Gate. Whoever seeks knowledge, let him come to the Gate of the City."

3421 - Abd al-Salam ibn Salih ibn Sulayman ibn Ayyub ibn Maysera al-Qurashi, Abu al-Salt al-Harawi, mawla of Abd al-Rahman ibn Samura, lived in Nisapur and traveled for hadith to Basra, Kufa, the Hijaz, and Yemen. He was a servant of Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha, an educated man, jurisprudent, and scholar .... Abu Bakr ibn Thabit al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rizq narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Mukarram al-Qadi narrated to us, saying: Al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Anbari narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Salt al-Harawi narrated to us, saying: Abu Muawiya narrated to us from al-A'mash, from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I am the city of knowledge, and Ali is its gate. Whoever wants knowledge should come to his gate." Al-Qasim said: I asked Yahya ibn Ma'in about this hadith, and he said: It is authentic. Abu Bakr ibn Thabit al-Hafiz said: He meant that it is authentic as a narration from Abu Muawiya and is not false, as it has been reported by others from him. He said: We had not heard of this. When told, he replied that this was what could be denied, saying: Not this, as we had not heard of it. One incident was narrated from Abd al-Razzaq that we do not know and have not heard. It was said to Abu Abdullah: There were indeed some unsatisfactory hadiths with Abd al-Razzaq. He responded: I did not hear anything from them. Umar ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Malik narrated from his father: I asked Yahya ibn Ma'in about Abu al-Salt al-Harawi, and he said: He is trustworthy, honest, but he has a tendency towards Shiism.

2705 - "I am the city of knowledge, and Ali is its gate. So whoever seeks knowledge should come to the gate," for the Chosen One (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is the encompassing city of all religious meanings, or the city must have a gate. Thus, he informed that its gate is Ali (peace be upon him), so whoever takes his path enters the city, and whoever misses it misses the path of guidance. Both those in agreement and disagreement, as well as adversaries and opposers, have borne witness to his knowledge.

- .... "I am the city of knowledge, and Ali is its gate," presented from the narrations of Ali, Ibn Abbas, and Jabir. I say: Al-alai may have been mistaken in refuting Ibn al-Jawzi's judgment of it being fabricated, as his chains lead to a status of at least حسن (Hasan), so it would not be weak, let alone fabricated.... Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani said: Al-Hakim authenticated it, and Ibn al-Jawzi disagreed, labeling it a lie. The correct view is contrary to both of their statements, and the narration is حسن (Hasan), neither صحيح (Sahih) nor كذب (a lie).
