8385 - Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Hanafiyan narrated to us, saying:
Bakir ibn Musmar narrated to us, saying: I heard Amir ibn Sa'd say: Muawiya said to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas: "What prevented you from condemning Ali ibn Abi Talib?" He replied, "I will not condemn him as long as I remember three things that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said. To have one of them would be dearer to me than red camels." He continued, "I will not condemn him as long as I remember the time when revelation descended upon him, and he took Ali, his two sons, and Fatima, and gathered them under his cloak, then said, 'My Lord, these are my family and the people of my house,' nor will I condemn him when he left him in a battle he participated in." He said, "You have left me with the children and women." Muawiya replied, "Would you not be pleased to be in relation to me as Aaron was to Moses, except that there is no prophethood?" I will not condemn him as long as I remember the day of Khaybar when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory through him." We all stood to show our eagerness, and he asked, "Where is Ali?" They said, "He has a sore eye." He said, "Call him." So they called him, and he spat in his eyes, then gave him the banner, and Allah granted victory through him." And by Allah, Muawiya did not mention him with a word until he left the city.
