4632 - Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub said: Muhammad ibn Sinan al-Qazzaz narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Abd al-Majid al-Hanafi and Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qutti'i both informed me, saying: Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to me, from my father, who said: Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us,
from Bakir ibn Mismar, who said: I heard Muawiya say to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (r): "What prevents you from reviling the son of Abi Talib?" Sa'd replied: "I will not revile him, for you mentioned three things that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said to him: For me to have one of them is more beloved than red camels." Muawiya said to him: "What are they, O Abu Ishaq?" Sa'd replied: "I will not speak ill of him for you mentioned when the revelation descended upon him, and he took Ali and his two sons and Fatima, and brought them under his cloak, then said: 'O Lord, these are my Ahlul Bayt (People of the House),' and I will not revile him for you mentioned when he left him during the expedition to Tabuk, which the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) was undertaking. Ali said to him: 'You have left me with the children and women.' He replied: 'Will you not be pleased to be in relation to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?'" And I will not revile him for you mentioned on the day of Khaybar, when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: "I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory through him." We began to stretch our necks towards the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), and he said: "Where is Ali?" They said: "He has sore eyes." He said: "Bring him to me." So they brought him, and he spat in his face, then gave him the banner, and Allah granted victory through him." Sa'd continued: "So, by Allah, Muawiya did not mention him again until he left the city." This is a sound hadith on the conditions of the two sheikhs, and they did not narrate it in this chain, although they both agreed to narrate the hadith of Brotherhood and the hadith of the Banner.
