- .... Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhi said: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Hatem ibn Isma'il narrated to us from Bakir ibn Musmar from Amir ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas from his father, who said that Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan commanded Sa'd and said: "What prevents you from reviling Abu Turab?" Sa'd replied: "As for the three things you mentioned that he said to him, to have one of them would be more beloved to me than red camels. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say - and he was behind him in one of the expeditions - that Ali said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, will you leave me with the women and children?'" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "Is it not satisfactory to you to be to me in the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me?" And I heard him say on the Day of Khaybar: "I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love." Sa'd said: So I stretched out for it, but he said: "Call me Ali." Ali was brought to him, having sore eyes. He (the Prophet) then spat in his eyes and gave him the banner, and Allah opened (the city) for him.

- .... Imam Ahmad said: Yahya ibn Bakir narrated to us, from Israel, from Abu Ishaq from Abu Abd Allah al-Judali al-Bajali, who said: I entered upon Umm Salamah, and she said to me: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) being insulted among you?" I replied: "God forbid!" or "Glory be to God!" or words to that effect. She said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Whoever insults Ali has indeed insulted me.'"

- .... Imam Ahmad said: Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, quoting Husayn, who said: Ali narrated to me from Hilal ibn Yasaf from Abdullah ibn Zalum al-Mazani, who said: When Muawiya left Kufa, he appointed al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba. He then kept appointing speakers who spoke ill of Ali. I was sitting beside Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn Umar ibn Nufayl. Sa'id became angry, stood up, took my hand, and I followed him. He said: "Do you not see this man, being unjust to himself, who orders the curse of a man from the people of Kufa? And I bear witness that the nine are from the people of Paradise, and if I bore witness to the tenth, I would not be sinning." I said: "What is that?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'Hold firm, O Hurayrah, for there is nothing upon you except a prophet, a truthful one, or a martyr.'" I said: "Who are they?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Zubair, Talha, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf, and Sa'd ibn Malik." I said: "And who is the tenth?" He said: "I am." And it should be noted that the earlier narration of Umm Salama should be recorded here, in which she said to Abu Abdullah al-Jadali: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) insulted among you on the pulpits?" Ahmed narrated this.

- .... And there came from another source regarding Amir ibn Sa'd: that Sa'd saw a group gathered around a man, and he leaned his head in between two people and found him insulting Ali and Talha and al-Zubayr. He reprimanded him for this, but he did not stop. Sa'd said, "I will pray for you." The man replied, "Are you threatening me as if you are a prophet?" So Sa'd turned and entered the house of the family of so-and-so, where he performed ablution and prayed two rak'ahs. Then he raised his hands and said, "O Allah, if You know that this man has insulted people who have received from You a previous decree of goodness, and that his anger at You for their sake is displeasing to You, then make him today a sign and a lesson." Then a distressed Bactrian (a type of camel) emerged from the house of the family of so-and-so, not to be turned away by anything, until it entered among a crowd of people. The people dispersed, and it seized him between its legs, continuing to thrash him until he died. Ibn Kathir said: I indeed saw people running after Sa'd, saying, "Allah has answered your prayer, O Abu Ishaq!"

- .... So when the matter settled for Mu'awiyah, he received delegations, and they expressed their grievances to him. He apologized to them, and he excused them in a very lengthy conversation, and he appointed him to be the governor of Medina twice and dismissed him from it twice in favor of Marwan ibn al-Hakam and this Sa'id did not curse Ali, while Marwan did curse him.

- .... And his father, al-Hakam, was one of the greatest enemies of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He only converted to Islam on the Day of the Conquest and al-Hakam later went to Medina, but the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled him to Ta'if, where he died. Marwan was one of the main causes of the siege of Uthman because he fabricated a letter on Uthman's behalf to Egypt, ordering the killing of those delegates. When he was in charge of the city on behalf of Muawiya, he would curse Ali every Friday from the pulpit. Al-Hasan ibn Ali said to him: "Indeed, Allah has cursed your father, al-Hakam, and you are in his loins, through the tongue of His Prophet." He replied: "May Allah curse al-Hakam and whatever he fathered, and Allah knows best."
