1538 - Abu Abdullah Ja'far ibn Idris al-Qazwini narrated to me in the Sacred Mosque, saying: Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Ghalabi al-Basri narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Ja'far ibn Sulayman al-Hashimi narrated to us, saying: My father Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to me, from his father Sulayman ibn Ali, from his father Ali ibn Abdullah, who said: I was with my father Abdullah ibn Abbas after his eyesight had failed, while he was in Mecca. He passed by a group of people from the people of Sham near the Zamzam well, who were insulting Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). He said to Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who was leading him: "Turn me towards them." Sa'id replied: "Which of you is insulting Allah?" They said: "Glory be to Allah, there is no one among us insulting Allah." He said: "Then which of you is insulting the Messenger of Allah?" They said: "By Allah, there is no one among us insulting the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then which of you is insulting Ali?" They said: "As for this, he used to."
Ibn Abbas then said: "Then I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Whoever insults Ali has insulted me, and whoever insults me has insulted Allah. And whoever insults Allah, the Almighty, Allah, the Exalted, will cast him face-first into the Fire of Hell.'" He then turned away from them and said to me: "O son, what did you see them do?" I replied: "O father, they looked at you with reddened eyes, the gaze of billy goats at the shears of the butcher." He said: "Give me more, my son." I said: "Their eyes were narrowed, and their chins were lowered, looking like the humiliated before the overpowering, mighty one." He said: "Give me more, my son." I replied: "I have no more to add, O father, except what I have said." He said: "But I have more to add: Their living are a disgrace to their dead, and those who remain are a humiliation to those who have passed."
