82 - Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Mansur al-Harithi narrated to us, saying: Musa ibn Dawud narrated to us, from Ibn Luheiya, from Khalid ibn Yazid from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal, who said: Sa'd ibn Malik was with Marwan. So he described him, and Marwan cursed Ali. Sa'd then said: O commander, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "It is a Muslim's duty to advise another Muslim, and I forbid you from cursing Ali,". Marwan stood up, and Sa'd said: Sit down, for this is not a time to stand. I will inform you of four matters that preceded Ali from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that none of us should claim for himself. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) entered upon us while we were sleeping in the mosque, and among us were Abu Bakr and Umar. He began to wake us, one by one, saying: "Do not sleep in the mosque; sleep in your homes," until he reached Ali. He said: "O Ali, you may sleep, for what is permissible for you is permissible for me," and witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent an army, appointing a man as their commander. They returned, and they were saying to him, and he was saying to them. He said: "I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant him victory." Then he called Ali, who was suffering from an eye ailment, and he spat in his eyes and gave him the banner. He said: "I saw him take the banner, with one hand, and a door with the other, using it as a shield. Groups of us would gather around him, (defending him) without being able to harm him." And witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went out on a campaign to Tabuk, and Ali caught up with him at the hill. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "What brings you here, O Ali?" Ali replied: "The hypocrites claimed that you only left me behind out of disdain." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "What would prevent me from feeling disdain for you on such and such a day, but I left you in your family in a position similar to that of Harun to his brother Musa?" And witness that we entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the day he passed away, and he was motioning to Ali, and the soul of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) departed while he was beside him. He forbade you from cursing him.

216 - Ibn Sulayman narrated to me, saying: Ibrahim ibn Hajjaj narrated to us, Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, Sadaqah ibn al-Muthanna al-Nakha'i narrated to us from Riyaah ibn al-Harith, who said: We were with al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba while he was in the mosque, and Sa'id ibn Zayd came, and al-Mughira made space for him and he sat with him on the couch. Then a young man from the people of Kufa, called Qays ibn Alqama, came and insulted (Sa'id) and was insulted in return. Sa'id said: O Mughira, who is this man insulting? Al-Mughira replied: He is insulting Ali. Sa'id said: O Mughira, do I not see the companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) being insulted in your presence? I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) say: "Lying about me is not like lying about anyone else. Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him take his place in the Fire." Then he mentioned the hadith.

He said that the commander of Kufa that day was al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba. Then Sa'id ibn Zayd stood up to him and said to al-Mughira: "O Mughira, is a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) being insulted while you are a witness, and you do not denounce it or change it?" You heard the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, "Ali is one of those who are destined for Paradise," and Abu Bakr is among those destined for Paradise, and Sa'd is among those destined for Paradise, and Abdur Rahman is among those destined for Paradise." They asked him, "Who is the ninth?" He replied, "I am."
