The Umayyads used to curse Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) in the sermons, but when Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz took office, he abolished this practice and wrote to his governors to enforce its abolition, reading instead: {Indeed, Allah commands you to render trust to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.} (Surah an-Nahl 16:90). This was continued to be read in sermons until now.
