- Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Samarkandi and Abu al-Barakat ibn al-Mubarak both said: Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Naqur narrated to us, saying: Abu Tahir al-Mukhlis narrated to us, saying: Abu Hamed Muhammad ibn Harun al-Hadrami narrated to us, saying: Abu Hisham Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Rafea narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fadail narrated to us: al-A'mash narrated to us from Abu al-Zubair from Jabir, who said: When the Day of Ta'if occurred, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali and spoke to him in private for a long time. Some of his companions said, "He has prolonged his private conversation with his cousin."
He said, "I am not the one he is confiding in, but Allah is the one who is confiding in him."- Thus he said, and it is actually al-Ajlach who informed us of this. Um al-Mujtaba al-Alawiya said: It was recited to Ibrahim ibn Mansur, and Abu Bakr ibn al-Muqri narrated to us, as did Abi Ya'la. Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i narrated to us: Ibn Fadail narrated to us: al-Ajlach narrated to us from Abu al-Zubair from Jabir, who said: When the Day of Ta'if occurred, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) spoke to Ali in private and prolonged his conversation. Some of his companions said, "He has prolonged his private conversation with his cousin." When this reached him,
he said, "I am not the one he is confiding in; rather, Allah is the one confiding in him."- Abu al-Barakat al-Rubdhi narrated to us, stating: Abu al-Faraj al-Shahid narrated to us, and so did Abu al-Husayn al-Nahwi, and Abu Abd Allah al-Muharibi narrated to us: Ibad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us: Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us from Salim ibn Abi Hafsa and Ibrahim ibn Hammad from Abu al-Zubair from Jabir, who said: When the Day of Ta'if occurred, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was alone with Ali and spoke to him in private for a long time while Abu Bakr and Umar were watching. The people said: Then he turned to us, and the people said, "Your conversations today, O Messenger of Allah, have been lengthy."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "I am not the one he is confiding in, but Allah is the one who is confiding in him."
