967 - Abu al-Muthaffar Isma'il ibn al-Husayn al-Tamimi narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Bazzari narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ali narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to me, from al-Ajlakh, from Abu al-Zubair, from Jabir, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was choosing Ali (peace be upon him) one day during the Battle of Ta'if, and they said: 'Your conversing with Ali has been prolonged since today.'
He replied: 'I am not choosing him, but Allah is choosing him.'" - Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi narrated to us, saying: Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ubaydullah ibn al-Shakhir narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Baghandi narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Sufi narrated to us, saying: Makhlul ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Jabbar ibn al-Abbas, from Ammar al-Dahhani, from Abu al-Zubair, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was choosing Ali (peace be upon him), and his companions said: "How much he is conversing with him!"
He replied: 'I am not choosing him, but Allah is choosing him.'
