1 - Ahmad in his Musnad: With his chain of narration from Jabir ibn Abd Allah (ra) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali during the Battle of Ta'if and spoke to him in private, continuing their conversation for a long time until some of his companions began to dislike it. Then, one of them said: "He has certainly prolonged his private conversation with his cousin today." When this reached him, he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Indeed, someone has said: 'He has certainly prolonged his private conversation with his cousin today.' But I did not speak to him in private; rather, Allah spoke to him in private." This is a good, strange narration.

386 - Narrative Twenty-First: He (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali during the expedition to Ta'if and spoke to him in private, prolonging their conversation until some of the companions began to dislike it. Then, one of them said: "Today, he is prolonging the private talk with his cousin." He (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became aware of this, gathered a group of them, and then said: "Indeed, someone said: 'Today, he is prolonging the private talk with his cousin.' But I was not speaking to him in private; rather, Allah was speaking to him in private.'" Ahmad narrated this in al-Musnad.
