Hadith No: 1
Al-Tabari - al-Mu'jam al-Awsat - Chapter on the letter 'Ayn
Those Named Ali - Ali ibn Sa'id ibn Bashir al-Razi
Volume: (5) - Page Number: (53 > 55)
4093 - Ali ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: I was told by Ibad ibn Ya'qub, who said: Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi, Abdullah ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Ubaidah ibn Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, narrated to us, saying: al-Harith ibn Hasirah narrated to us from Sakhr ibn al-Hakam, from his uncle, that he heard Amr ibn al-Hamq say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent a expedition and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, you send us while we have no provisions, no food, and no knowledge of the way." He said, "You will come across a man with a radiant face who will feed you food, give you drink, and guide you on the path. He is from the people of Paradise." When the group descended upon Ali, they began to point at each other and look at me. I said, "What is it with you? Why do you point at each other and look at me?" They said, "Rejoice with the good news from Allah and His Messenger, for we recognize in you the description of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." So I asked them what he told you. I fed them, gave them drinks, provided them with supplies, and set out with them until I guided them on the way. Then I returned to my family and advised them regarding my camels. After that, I went out to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "What are you calling to?" He said, "I am calling to the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, to the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, the pilgrimage to the House, and the fasting of Ramadan." I said, "If we respond to you in this, will we be safe regarding our families, our blood, and our properties?" He said, "Yes." So I accepted Islam and returned to my people, telling them of my conversion. Many of them embraced Islam through me. Then I immigrated to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and while I was with him one day, he said to me, "O Amr, would you like me to show you a sign of Paradise who eats food, drinks, and walks in the markets?" I said, "Yes, may my father be sacrificed for you." He said, "This one and his people are a sign of Paradise," and he pointed to Ali ibn Abi Talib. Then he said to me, "O Amr, would you like me to show you a sign of Hell who eats food, drinks, and walks in the markets?" I said, "Yes, may my father be sacrificed for you." He said, "This one and his people are a sign of Hell," and he pointed to a man. When the turmoil broke out, I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and I fled from the sign of Hell to the sign of Paradise. Do you see the Banu Umayyah wanting to kill me after this?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "By Allah, if I were in a hole within a hole, the Banu Umayyah would extract me until they killed me." My beloved, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), told me that my head would be the first head to be struck in Islam and moved from one city to another." Only Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated this hadith from al-Harith.

- Al-Tabarani narrated from Amr ibn al-Hamq (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent a military detachment, and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, you send us while we have no provisions, no food, and no knowledge of the way." He said, "You will come across a man with a pleasant face who will feed you from the food and give you to drink, and he will show you the way. He is from the people of Paradise." The people continued to act as if they were making arrangements, some of them signaling to each other and looking at me. I said, "What is it with you? You signal to each other and look at me." They replied, "Rejoice in the glad tidings of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), for we recognize in you the description of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." Then they told me what he had said to them. I fed them, gave them drink, and provided them with supplies, and I set out with them until I guided them on the way. Then I returned to my family and advised them about my camels. After that, I went out to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "What are you calling to?" He said, "I am calling to the testimony that there is no deity but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, the pilgrimage to the Sacred House, and fasting in Ramadan." I said, "If we respond to you in this, will we be safe over our families, our lives, and our wealth?" He said, "Yes." So I accepted Islam and then returned to my family, informing them of my conversion. Many of them embraced Islam at my hands. Then I migrated to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and while I was with him one day, he said, "O Amr, would you like me to show you a sign of Paradise that eats food, drinks beverages, and walks in the markets?" I said, "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He said, "This one and his people," and he pointed to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He then said to me, "O Amr, would you like me to show you a sign of Hell that eats food, drinks beverages, and walks in the markets?" I said, "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He said, "This one," and he pointed to a man. When the fitnah (tribulation) occurred, I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and fled from the sign of Hell to the sign of Paradise, and I saw the Banu Umayyah wanting to kill me after this." I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "By Allah, even if I were a stone in the belly of a stone, the Banu Umayyah would extract me to kill me." My beloved, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), told me that my head would be the first head to be severed and displayed in Islam, and it would be transported from one city to another."

- .... And 'Amr ibn al-Hamaq al-Khuza'i was mentioned among them and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "O 'Amr, do you wish me to show you a sign of Paradise?" He replied: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." So he passed by me and said: "This and his people are a sign of Paradise." When Uthman was killed and the people pledged allegiance to Ali, he remained with him and was with him until he was killed. Then Mu'awiyah wrote seeking him and sent someone to bring him. Al-Ajlakh related to me: 'Imran ibn Sa'id al-Bajjali told me that Rifa'ah ibn Shaddad al-Bajjali, who was a contemporary of 'Amr ibn al-Hamaq, went out with him when he was sought and said to me: "O Rifa'ah, the people will kill me. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) informed me that both jinn and humans will share in my blood." And he said to me: "O 'Amr, if a man gives you security on your life, do not kill him, or you will meet Allah with the face of a traitor." Rifa'ah said: He had not finished his narration until I saw the reins of horses, so I bid him farewell and confronted him. A serpent leapt at him and bit him, and they reached him and severed his head, making it the first head to be sent as a gift in Islam.
