Al-Tahawi - Sharh Mushkil al-Athar
Chapter: Clarification of the Difficulty Regarding What Has Been Narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the Matter He Excluded from the Doors That Were Leading to His Mosque, Then He Ordered Them to Be Closed, Except for That One Door

3553 - Yazid ibn Sinan narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn al-Jarrah al-Qahistani narrated to us, saying: Zafer ibn Sinan narrated to us, from Isra'il ibn Yunus, from Abdullah ibn Sharik, from al-Harith ibn Thalabah, who said: I said to Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did you witness anything of the merits of Ali (peace be upon him)?" He replied, "I witnessed four merits for him, and the fifth, I would have witnessed, for it to be the last of them would be dearer to me than the world and everything in it: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) closed the doors of the mosque and left the door of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) open. When asked about this, he said, 'I did not close it, nor did I leave it open,'" and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) married him to Fatimah (peace be upon her), and she bore him children, and he gave him the banner on the Day of Khaybar.

3554 - Ahmad ibn Shu'aib narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Sufi informed us, saying: Ali - and he was the son of Qadim, from Fitr - who was the son of Khalifa, narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Shirik, from Abdullah ibn Abi al-Ruqayqim, from Sa'd: that al-Abbas came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "You have closed our doors except for the door of Ali." He (the Prophet) replied: "I did not open them, nor did I close them."

3555 - And Ahmad ibn Shu'aib narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Wahb ibn Abi Karima al-Harani informed me, who said: Maskin ibn Bakir narrated to us, who said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu Balj, from Amr ibn Maymun from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his holy progeny), who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded that the doors of the mosque be closed, except for the door of Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).

3556 - Ahmad narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us, saying: Al-Wadih - who is Abu 'Awaneq - narrated to us, saying: Yahya narrated to us - he was Ibn Abi Sulaym, Abu Balj - narrated to us from Amr ibn Maymun, who said: Ibn Abbas said: "And the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) closed the doors of the mosque, excluding the door of Ali (peace be upon him)." He would enter the mosque while in a state of major ritual impurity, and that was his way, for he had no other way.

3558 - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Dawud narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Salih al-Nakhas narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Amr al-Ruqai narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysa, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Ayizar ibn Harith, who said: I was with Ibn Umar, and a man asked him about Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said to him: As for Ali, do not ask us about him, but look at his position with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), for he closed our doors in the mosque, except for his. And as for Uthman, he committed a great sin on the day the two groups met, for which Allah, the Exalted, forgave him, and he committed a small sin that you killed him for.

3560 - And Fahd ibn Sulayman narrated to us, who said: Abu Na'im narrated to us, and both said: Hisham ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Amr ibn Asid, from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), who said: We used to talk during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "The best of people is Abu Bakr, then Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and Ali (peace be upon him) was given three virtues, any one of which would be dearer to me than red camels: his marriage to the Messenger of Allah's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) daughter Fatimah, who bore children by him; he was given the flag on the day of Khaybar, and all the doors of the mosque were closed except for Ali's door."

3561 - Ahmad ibn Shu'ayb narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bashar informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: 'Auf narrated to us from Maymun Abu Abdullah from Zaid ibn Arqam, who said: A number of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had doors opening into the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Close these doors except for the door of Ali." Some people spoke about this, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up and praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: "As for what follows, I was commanded to close these doors, except for the door of Ali," and regarding this, a speaker among you said: "By Allah, they were neither closed nor opened, but I was commanded to do something and I followed it..."
