Book of Al-Maghazi wa as-Siyar - Chapter on the Battle of Khaybar
Volume: (6) - Page Number: (150)
10201 - From al-Bara' ibn Azib who said: We besieged Khaybar, and Abu Bakr took the banner and went out, but he returned without having opened it. Then on the next day, Umar took it and went out, but he also returned without having opened it. The people experienced difficulties and hardships that day. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I will hand the banner tomorrow to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger. He will not return until it is opened for him." We spent the night with our hearts at ease, thinking that victory would come tomorrow. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the Fajr prayer, then stood and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, and he spat in his eyes and handed him the banner, and it was opened for him. Al-Bara' said, and I was among those who stretched their bodies to see this. Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of sahih (authentic) narration.

14696 - Amr ibn Maymun (meaning al-Awdi) said: I was sitting with Ibn Abbas when seven men approached him and said: "O Ibn Abbas, either you stand with us, or let these people leave us." Ibn Abbas replied: "Rather, I will stand with you," and he was in good health that day, before he became blind. So they moved aside and began to talk, and I do not know what they said. Then he came back, brushing off his garment and saying, "Dissatisfaction!" and "Spit!" They spoke ill of a man whom the Prophet (pbuh) said to him: "I will surely send a man whom Allah will never humiliate. He loves Allah and His Messenger." So those who were eager for this began to look around. He then asked, "Where is Ali?" They replied, "In the tent, grinding." He said, "What, none of you could do the grinding?" Then Ali came, his eyes swollen, barely able to see. The Prophet (pbuh) then breathed into his eyes and shook the flag three times before handing it to him.
