Volume: (2) - Page Number: (608)
1379 - His father said: that Ubaydullah ibn Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated to us, from my father, from Awf, from Maimun Abu Abdullah, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) camped at the fortress of Khaybar, the people of the fortress were tumultuous, some among others, and they were frightened. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Indeed, when we descend into the courtyard of a people, evil will befall the morning of those who warn."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow I will give the flag to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." So, the next day, Abu Bakr and Umar hastened to it. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, and he spat in his eyes and gave him the banner. Thus, he brandished it among the people and encountered Marhab, who was saying:
"Khaybar knows that I am Marhab,
Shaking my weapon, a proven warrior.
When the lions charge, breathing fire,
I strike sometimes and sometimes I thrust."
Ali met him, and they exchanged two blows. He struck him on the head, and a sound was heard from Marhab that the people of the army could hear, and he bit the sword against the ground. He said: "The last of the people did not gather until Allah granted victory to the first of them."
