13058 - Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Salamah narrated to us, saying: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Hatim, from Yazid ibn Abi Ubayd, from Salmah ibn al-Akwa', who said: Ali (peace be upon him and him be pleased) was delayed from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) at Khaybar and was suffering from conjunctivitis. He said: "Shall I delay myself from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He then went out and caught up with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When it was evening of the night that Allah opened for them in the morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow, I will give the banner, or it will be taken by someone, a man whom Allah and His Messenger love," or he said: "who loves Allah and His Messenger. Allah will grant victory through him." Suddenly, we saw Ali (peace be upon him and him be pleased), whom we had been hoping for. They said: "This is Ali," and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) gave him the banner, and Allah granted victory through him. Both al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated this in their Sahih from Qutaybah ibn Sa'id.

18230 - Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdān informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, saying: Ubayd ibn Sharīk narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us that Abu Hazim told him he heard Sahel ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say on the day of Khaybar: 'I will give the banner to a man through whom Allah will open (the victory).' So the people spent the night discussing which of them it would be given. When morning came, the people went out to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), all hoping to be given it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 'Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?'" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, he is complaining of his eyes." So he sent for him, and he (the Prophet) spat in his eye and prayed for him, and he was healed from that moment as if he had never had any ailment. He then gave him the banner, and Ali said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them until they are like us?' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: 'Hold on, proceed until you settle at their frontier, then invite them to Islam and inform them of what is incumbent upon them in terms of rights.' By Allah, guiding through you even one man is better for you than red camels." This was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their Sahih from Qutaybah from Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Hazim.

18346 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz has informed us, saying: Abu al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Salamah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn al-Samad ibn Abd al-Warith ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Ikrimah ibn Ammar narrated to me, from Eyas ibn Salamah ibn al-Akkaw, who said: My father narrated to me, that we arrived with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and he mentioned the lengthy hadith. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent for Ali (peace be upon him), calling him while he was afflicted with redness in his eyes (and he said: "I will surely give the flag today to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.") So I came with him, leading him by the hand. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) spat in his eyes, and he was cured, so he was given the flag. Then Marhab emerged, saying:
"Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, a warrior wielding weapons, an experienced hero. When battles approach, I ignite with fire."
Ali (peace be upon him) then stepped forward to face him, saying:
"I am the one my mother named Haydarah, like a lion of the forests, dreadfully fierce in appearance. I will stand among them, wielding a palm-sized measure."
He struck Marhab, splitting his head and killing him, and victory was granted. Muslim narrated this in Sahih from another chain, from Ikrimah ibn Ammar.
