- Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Haram ibn Uthman, from Abu Hazim from Jabir ibn Abd Allah al-Ansari, that Ka'b al-Ahbar stood during the time of Umar and said: While we were sitting with Umar, the Commander of the Faithful, what were the last words spoken by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? Umar replied: Ask Ali. Ka'b then asked: Where is he? Umar said: He is here. So he asked him, and Ali replied: I supported him against my chest, and he rested his head on my shoulder, saying: Prayer, prayer. Ka'b said: Thus was the last trust of the prophets, with which they were commanded and upon which they will be raised. Ka'b then asked: Who washed him, O Commander of the Faithful? Umar replied: Ask Ali. So he asked him, and Ali said: I was the one who washed him, while Abbas was sitting there, and Usamah and Shuqrān were coming to me with water.

So Ali was summoned to him. He said: "Come closer to me." I drew nearer and leaned against him, and he continued to lean against me, speaking to me, until some of the saliva of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) touched me. Then the condition of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) worsened, and he became heavy in my lap. I shouted, 'O Abbas, help me, for I am perishing!' So Abbas came, and both of their efforts together were only able to lay him down.

He said: Then al-Abbas came with the sons of Abd al-Muttalib, and they stood at the door while Ali kept saying: "With my father and mother, you were good in life and in death." He said that a fragrant breeze arose, unlike anything they had ever experienced before. Al-Abbas then said to Ali: "Leave your grieving, like a woman's grieving, and turn to your companion." Ali replied: "Enter to the one in your care." The Ansar said: "We beseech you by Allah for our share of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." So, they admitted a man from them called Aws ibn Khawli, carrying a jar in one of his hands. Ali washed him, placing his hand under the shirt, and al-Fadl held the cloth over him while the Ansari poured water. On Ali's hand was a cloth that he guided into the shirt, which rested on it.
