1896 - Jarir narrated to us, from al-Mughira ibn Muqsim al-Dabi, from Umm Musa, from Umm Salama, who said: "By the One in whom Umm Salama trusts, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest of people in time to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). So, when it was the morning after his (the Prophet's) passing, he sent a messenger to him, and I saw that he had sent him on a need. She said: And he kept saying in the morning, 'Did Ali come? Did Ali come?' three times, and he came before the sun had risen. When he came, we knew that he had a need for him, so we left the house. We had returned that day to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the house of Aisha, and I was among the last to leave the house.
Then I sat closer to the door with them, and Ali knelt over him, engaging in quiet conversation and sharing secrets. He was the closest of people in time to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali."
