4710 - Ahmad ibn Jaafar al-Quti'i narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to me, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from my father, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Ma'mar, Abu Tawalah al-Ansari, narrated to me from Sulayman ibn Muhammad ibn Kab ibn Ujrah, from Zainab, daughter of Abu Sa'id, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (ra), who said: "Ali ibn Abi Talib complained about the people to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
So he stood among us giving a sermon, and I heard him say: 'O people, do not complain about Ali. By Allah, he is indeed the sternest in matters related to Allah and in the path of Allah.'" This is a hadith with a sound chain of narration, and they did not include it in their compilations.
