1721 - Waki' narrated to us, from Sharik, from Abu Ishaq, from Hubayra: Al-Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) addressed us and said: "Indeed, a man has left you who did not precede you in knowledge, nor will those after you be able to attain his level. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would send him with the banner, Gabriel on his right, and Michael on his left, and he would not return until victory was granted to him."

4855 - Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya, the nephew of Tahir al-Aqiqi al-Hasan, narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to me, from my uncle Ali ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad, who said: Al-Husayn ibn Zayd narrated to me, from Umar ibn Ali, from his father Ali ibn al-Hasan, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali addressed the people when Ali was killed. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Tonight, a man has passed away whom neither the earlier ones could surpass in deeds nor the later ones could reach. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to give him his flag, and he would fight while Gabriel was on his right and Michael on his left, in what he would return to until Allah opened [victory] to him. He left behind no gold or silver among the people of the earth except for seven hundred dirhams that remained from his gifts, which he intended to use to buy a servant for his family...."

14798 - Abu al-Tufayl narrated: Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib delivered a sermon to us, in which he praised and extolled Allah, mentioned the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (رضي الله عنه), the Seal of the Prophets, the Successor of the Prophets, and the Trustworthy One among the Sincere and the Martyrs, and then said: "O people, a man has departed from you who was not preceded by those before him, nor will those after him attain his level. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to give him the banner, and he would fight with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left." He would not return until Allah opened [the way] for him....

14799 - And in another narration: "And in it, Joshua ibn Nun, the boy of Moses, was killed." al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat and al-Kabir in a summarized form, although he said: "On the night of the twenty-seventh of Ramadan," and Abu Ya'la summarized it, and al-Bazzar mentioned something similar except that he said: "And he will be given the banner, and when the battle intensifies, Gabriel will fight at his right." He also said: "And it was the twenty-first of Ramadan." Ahmad narrated it with considerable summarization, and the chain of Ahmad and some of the routes of al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir are sound (hasan).

6758 - Al-Sami narrated to us, saying: Sakin ibn Abdul Aziz narrated to us, saying: Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: When Ali (peace be upon him) was killed, Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) stood up as a speaker, praised Allah, and extolled Him, then said: "As for what follows, by Allah, you have killed tonight a man on a night in which the Qur'an was revealed, in which Isa ibn Maryam was raised, and in which Yahushua ibn Nun, the youth of Musa (peace be upon him), was killed." Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, saying: Sakin narrated to us, and my father also narrated to me from Khalid ibn Jaber, from his father, from Hasan ibn Ali, similar to this, and added: "And in it, Allah forgave Ali ibn Israel." And he said, "By Allah, no one before him preceded him, and no one after him will follow him even though the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would send him in an expedition with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left." By Allah, he left no gold or silver except eight hundred or seven hundred dirhams, which he had set aside for a servant to buy.

By Allah, he left behind no wealth, whether white or yellow, except for eight hundred dirhams in the price of a servant.

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his sacred progeny) used to send him on expeditions and give him the banner, and he would not return until Allah had granted victory to him, with Jibril (Gabriel) on his right and Mikail (Michael) on his left. He left behind no wealth, whether white or yellow, except for seven hundred dirhams that remained from his provisions, which he intended to use to buy a servant.

Gabriel will fight on his right and Michael on his left, and his banner will not be returned, meaning it will not be taken back, until Allah opens (victory) for him." He left behind no dinar or dirham except for seven hundred dirhams, which he took from his allowance, with the intention of buying a servant for his family.

36393 - From Dumrah ibn Rabi'ah, from Malik ibn Anas, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I will give the standard to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. He will be a brave man, not a coward, with Gabriel opening the way on his right and Michael on his left." So the people spent the night eager in anticipation. When morning came, he said: "Where is Ali?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he cannot see." He said: "Bring him to me." When he was brought, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Come closer to me." He drew closer, and the Prophet spat into his eyes and wiped them with his hand. Ali then stood up among those before him as if he had not experienced any irritation.

By Allah, no one who was before him could overtake him, and no one who will be after him can reach him. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would send him in a military expedition with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left." And, by Allah, he left no gold or silver except for eight hundred or seven hundred, which he had reserved for his servant.

Abu Ali al-Haddad informed us, saying: Abu Nu'aim al-Hafiz informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us, saying: Salih ibn Abi Muqatil narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdul Rahman al-Dimashqi, who came to us in Basra, narrated to us from Dumra ibn Rabi'ah, from Malik ibn Anas, from Nafie, from Ibn Umar from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I will surely give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and who loves him, Allah and His Messenger. He will be a fighter, not a fugitive, and Allah will grant him victory, with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left." So, the people spent the night eager and anticipating. When morning came, he said: "Where is Ali?" They replied, "O Messenger of Allah, he cannot be seen." He said: "Bring him to me," and he was brought. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "Come closer to me," and he drew closer. Then he spat in his eyes and wiped them with his hand, and he stood up before those between him, as if he had never had any sickness in his eyes.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to send him (the hadith continues) leaving no silver or gold behind except for seven hundred dirhams that remained from his allocation, which he intended to use to buy a good servant along his two routes.
