The rosary of al-Zahra (s)

Hadith No: 1

Narrated `Ali: Fatima complained of what she suffered from the hand mill and from grinding, when she got the news that some slave girls of the booty had been brought to Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.). She went to him to ask for a maid-servant, but she could not find him, and told `Aisha of her need. When the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) came, Aisha informed him of that. The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) came to our house when we had gone to our beds. We were going to get up, but he said, 'Keep at your places,' I felt the coolness of the Prophet's feet on my chest. Then he said, "Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: 'Allahu Akbar' for 34 times, and 'Al hamdu Li llah ' for 33 times, and Subhan Allah for 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested."

Narrated `Ali: Fatima (sa) complained about the blisters on her hand because of using a mill-stone. She went to ask the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) for servant, but she did not find him (at home) and had to inform `Aisha of her need. When he (s) came, `Aisha informed him about it. `Ali (as) added: The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) came to us when we had gone to our beds. When I was going to get up, he said, "'Stay in your places," and sat between us, till I felt the coolness of the feet on my chest. The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) then said, "Shall I not tell you of a thing which is better for you than a servant? When you (both) go to your beds, say 'Allahu Akbar' thirty-three times, and 'Subhan Allah' thirty-three times, 'Al hamdu 'illah' thirty-three times, for that is better for you than a servant." Ibn Seereen said, "Subhan Allah' (is to be said for) thirty-four times."

4777 - Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Yazid al-Adl in Baghdad narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abi al-Awwam al-Riyahi narrated to us, saying: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to me, from al-Awwam ibn Hushab, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came to us and placed his foot between mine and Fatimah's (ra), and taught us what to say when we took to our beds. He said: "O Fatimah, when you are in your place, then glorify Allah three times, and praise Him three times and thirty-three, and declare His greatness four times and thirty-four." Ali said: "By Allah, I never neglected it afterward." Then a man, who had something in his heart against him, asked: "Not even on the night of Siffin?" Ali replied: "Not even on the night of Siffin." This is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and they did not include it in their collections.

So the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was informed, and she went to him, but did not find him. Instead, she found Aisha and informed her. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came, Aisha told him about Fatimah's visit. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came to us while we had taken to our beds. I went to get up, but Ali said: "Stay where you are," and sat between us until I felt the warmth of his feet on my chest. He said: "Shall I not teach you something better than what you asked me?" When you take to your beds, perform takbir thirty-four times, tasbih thirty-three times, and tahmid thirty-three times, for it is better for you than a servant."

They pray as we pray, fast as we fast, perform pilgrimage as we perform pilgrimage, and give in charity, while we do not find anything to give in charity. He said: Would you like me to guide you to something that, if you do it, you will catch up with those who have gone before you, and none who come after you will catch up with you except those who do what you are doing? You should glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and declare Him greater than all four thirty-four times after each prayer.

They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, yet they excel us in giving charity, and we find nothing to give in charity, and they spend in the way of Allah, and we find nothing to spend. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Should I not inform you of something that, if you do it, they will not surpass you, and those who come after you will not catch up with you except for those who do what you do? They pray as you pray, fast as we fast, and perform حج (Hajj) as we do, and they have surplus wealth from which they can give in charity, while we have nothing to give in charity." He said, "Shall I not guide you to something that, if you do it, you will catch up with those who have gone before you and not be surpassed by those who come after you, except for those who do something similar to what you do?" You should glorify Allah (subhanAllah) thirty-three times after every prayer, and praise Him (alhamdulillah) thirty-three times, and extol His greatness (Allahu akbar) thirty-four times. This reached those wealthy individuals, and they said the same as what the poor had said. They came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him. He said, "That is the bounty of Allah; He gives it to whomever He wills." None narrated this from Raja' except Ibn Ajlan.

222 - Yahya ibn Ayyub al-‘Allaf al-Masri narrated to us, he said: Sa'id ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to us, from Ubaydullah ibn Zahr, from Ali ibn Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Ummamah, from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A group of people was gifted to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), delicate ones whom some kings of the Persians had sent him. I said to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Go to your father and ask him to use you as a servant, and complain to him about what you are enduring in service." So she went to him, but did not find him, as it was the day of Aisha. Then she returned again and went back and forth four times, but he did not come that day until he prayed the evening prayer. When he came, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him that Fatimah had sought him four times. So he went to Fatimah and said: "What brought you out of your house? I keep repeating my words, use your father as a servant." She presented her hands to him and said: "My hands are weary from the mill. I spent the entire night turning the mill until morning, and Abu al-Hasan is carrying Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them)." Then he said to her: "Be patient, O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, for the best of women are those who benefit their families. Should I not direct you to something better than what you seek? When you take to your beds, glorify Allah thirty-three times, and praise Him thirty-three times, and declare His perfection thirty-three times. Then seal it with 'There is no deity but Allah.' That is better for you than what you seek and better than this world and all it contains."

6587 - Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, saying: Abu Ma'shar narrated to us from Sa'id from Abu Huraira, who said: A group of poor people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy and the people of means have gone ahead of us in this world and the Hereafter." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was alarmed and said, "What is that?" They replied, "They have wealth from which they can give in charity, but we have no wealth. They have wealth with which they can go out in holy struggle (jihad), but we have no wealth. They have wealth with which they can perform pilgrimage (hajj), but we have no wealth." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then said, "Shall I not inform you of something by which you can catch up with their deeds? You should glorify Allah (saying) ‘Subhanallah’ thirty-three times, and praise Him (saying) ‘Alhamdulillah’ thirty-three times, and declare His greatness (saying) ‘Allahu Akbar’ thirty-four times at the end of every prayer. You will be able to match their deeds." So they did that, and the wealthy heard of it and did the same as their deeds. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, they have said the same as we said." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then said, "{That is the grace of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills} (Surah al-Jumu'ah 62:4)."

Chapter Two on Her Marriage to Ali (peace be upon him)

[The text is lengthy, so only the relevant excerpt is provided here]
- .... One day Ali said to Fatima, "By Allah, years have passed until I have complained of my chest, and Allah has sent your father to you with a child. Go and ask him to help you." She replied, "By Allah, I have done so much grinding that my hands have become swollen." So she went to the Prophet, who asked, "What brings you, O daughter?" She said, "I came to greet you," and she felt shy to ask him, so she returned. He said, "What did you do?" She replied, "I felt shy to ask him." So they both went to him. Ali said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has blessed you with offspring and abundance, so serve us." He said, "By Allah, I will not give you two and dismiss the people of the pledge whose bellies are full. I do not have what to spend on them. But I will sell to them, spend on them, and preserve their faith." They both returned and went to him when they had entered their niche (qutifah). If their heads were covered, their feet were bare, and if their feet were covered, their heads were bare. He said, "Shall I not tell you both of the best of what you could ask me?" They said, "Yes." He replied, "Words that Gabriel taught me: You should glorify Allah ten times after each prayer, and praise Allah ten times, and declare Allah is Most Great ten times. And when you retire to your bed, glorify Allah thirty-three times, and praise Him thirty-three times, and declare Allah is Most Great thirty-four times." He said, "By Allah, I have not neglected them since he taught them to me, رسول الله." ابن اللواء asked him, "Not even on the night of Siffin?" He replied, "Yes," and this practice continued with their descendants.
