- .... Al-Bazzar, Abu Ya'la, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Ibn Marduyah narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: "When this verse was revealed:" {And give to the near relative his right, and to the poor, and to the traveler, and do not squander foolishly} (Al-Isra 17:26), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Fatimah and gave her Fadak.
- .... Ibn Marduyah narrated from Ibn Abbas, who said: "When the following was revealed:" {And give to the near relative his right, and to the poor, and to the traveler, and do not squander foolishly} (Al-Isra 17:26), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) granted Fatimah Fadak. Ibn Kathir commented, after narrating Abu Sa'id's hadith, saying: "This hadith is problematic, if its chain of narration is deemed authentic, because the verse is Meccan, while Fadak was only conquered with Khaybar in the seventh year of the Hijrah. How can this be reconciled?"

- .... His statement, Almighty Allah said: {And give to the near relative his due, and to the needy, and to the traveler, and do not waste [your resources] wastefully} (al-Isra 17:26). Al-Tabarani and others narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: "When the verse was revealed:" {And give to the near relative his due, and to the needy, and to the traveler, and do not waste [your resources] wastefully} (al-Isra 17:26), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Fatimah and gave her Fadak. - .... And for this reason, the commentators mentioned two interpretations here. The first is that this verse was not revealed concerning the villages of Banu Nadir, because they had been attacked with horses and riders, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was besieging them along with the Muslims. Rather, it was regarding Fadak, because the people of Fadak withdrew from it, and thus those villages and properties were in the hands of the Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) without any battle. Therefore, he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would take from the produce of Fadak for his sustenance and the sustenance of those he supported, and would place the remainder in weapons and steeds. When he died, Fatimah (peace be upon her) claimed that he had been granting her Fadak.

12736 - Abu Ali al-Rudhbari narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, saying: Abu Dawud narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn al-Jarraḥ narrated to us, saying: Jarir narrated to us, from al-Mughira, who said: Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz gathered the Banu Marwan when he was appointed caliph and said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had Fadak, and he used to spend from it, support the young among the Banu Hashim from it, and marry off their widows. And Fatimah (peace be upon her) asked him to give it to her, but he refused. It remained thus in the life of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until he passed away. Then, when Abu Bakr (peace be upon him) assumed leadership, he acted concerning it as the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had done in his lifetime until he too passed away. And when Umar (peace be upon him) became caliph, he acted in it similarly to what they had done until he passed away. Then Marwan granted it, and it later became the possession of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said: 'I saw something that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prevented Fatimah from receiving, which I have no right to, and I bear witness to you all that I have returned it to its original state,' meaning, to the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." The الشيخ said: Marwan only granted Fadak during the days of Uthman ibn Affan (peace be upon him), and he seemed to interpret what was reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) as, "When Allah provides a prophet with a sustenance, it is for the one who will take care of it after him." He was content with it from his wealth, so he made it to his relatives and maintained their ties. This is also the interpretation held by many among the scholars. Others, however, believed that what was meant by this was the appointment of a successor and the termination of inheritance in it, allowing them to manage the affairs of the Muslims as Abu Bakr and Umar (peace be upon them) had done, and as Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz saw when he restored the matter in Fadak to what it had been. He justified this with what we narrated in the hadith of Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri. As for Khaybar and Fadak, Umar ibn al-Khattab (peace be upon him) withheld them and said: "They are the charity of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), meant for his rights that would arise and his emergencies, and their affair is to be left to the appointed leader." They remain in this state to this day.
