4 - Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, who said: Ubaydullah ibn Umar narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father Aslam, who said: When Abu Bakr was given the pledge of allegiance after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali and Zubair would enter upon Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and consult her, debating their matters. When this reached Umar ibn al-Khattab, he went out and entered upon Fatimah and said: "O daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), by Allah, there is no one dearer to us than your father, and there is no one dearer to us after your father than you. And by the oath of Allah, that will not stop me from telling you that if these few gather at your home, I will command them to burn the house down on them." He said: When Umar left, they came to her, and she said: "You know that Umar has come to me and has sworn by Allah that if you return, he will surely burn the house down on you, and by Allah, he will go through with what he has sworn." So they departed, acting wisely, and went to do what they thought best, and did not return to her. They departed from her and did not return to her until they had pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr.
