- .... He said: Abu Bakr noticed some people who had delayed their allegiance to him at Ali's place so he sent Umar ibn al-Khattab to them, and he came and called them while they were in Ali's house, but they refused to come out. So Umar called for firewood and said: "By the One in whose hand is Umar's soul, you will either come out or I will burn it over you with what is inside." It was said to him: "O Abu Hafs, Fatimah is inside." He replied: "Even so." Then they came out and pledged allegiance, except for Ali. He claimed that he said: "I swear that I will not leave this place or remove my cloak from my shoulders until I have compiled the Quran." Then Fatimah stood at her door and said: "I have no trust with a people who are in a worse situation than you. You left the funeral of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) before us and divided your affair among yourselves, without consulting us or seeing our rights." So Umar went to Abu Bakr and said to him: "Will you not take action against this one who is delaying his allegiance?" Abu Bakr replied: "O Qunfudh" - a client of his - "go and summon Ali." Qunfudh went to Ali and said: "What do you need?" He replied: "The successor of the Messenger of Allah is calling you." Ali said: "How quickly you have lied about the Messenger of Allah!" So Qunfudh returned and conveyed the message. Abu Bakr cried for a long time. Then Umar said for the second time: "Do not delay taking action against this one who is delaying his allegiance." Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: "Go back to him and tell him the Commander of the Faithful is calling you to pledge allegiance." So Qunfudh came to him and called out what he had been commanded. Ali raised his voice and said: "Glory be to Allah! He is claiming what does not belong to him!" Qunfudh returned and conveyed the message. Abu Bakr cried for a long time. Then Umar stood up and walked with a group until they came to Fatimah's door and knocked on it. When she heard their voices, she cried out at the top of her voice, weeping: "O Messenger of Allah, what are we to face after you from the son of al-Khattab and the son of Abi Quhafah?" When the people heard her voice and her weeping, they turned away, weeping. Their hearts were almost breaking, and their insides were bursting. Umar remained with some people who then brought Ali out and took him to Abu Bakr, saying: "Pledge allegiance." He said: "What if I do not?" They replied: "By Allah, the One who has no deity but Him, we will strike your neck." He said: "Then you will kill a servant of Allah and the brother of His Messenger." Umar said: "As for a servant of Allah, yes, but as for the brother of His Messenger, no." And Abu Bakr remained silent, not speaking. Umar said: "Will you not command something to be done about him?" He replied: "I will not force him into anything as long as Fatimah is beside him." So Ali went to the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), crying and calling out: "O son of my mother, the people have oppressed me and are about to kill me...."
