- And the news reached the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) after he had finished washing the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), anointing him, shrouding him, preparing him, and burying him after praying over him, along with those present from Banu Hashim and a group of his companions such as Salman, Abu Dharr, Al-Miqdad, Ammar, Hudhayfah, Ubay ibn Ka'b, and a congregation of about forty men. He then stood up to deliver a sermon, praising Allah and extolling Him, and then said: "If the imamate is to be in Quraysh, then I am the most deserving of Quraysh of it; and if it is not to be in Quraysh, then the Ansar are right in their claim."
Then he withdrew from them and entered his home, remaining there with those who followed him from the Muslims, and said: "I have an example in five of the prophets:
Noah, when he said: {Indeed, I am overcome, so help me} (Surah Qamar 54:10).
Ibrahim, when he said: {And I will dissociate myself from you and what you worship besides Allah} (Surah Maryam 19:48).
Lut, when he said: {If only I had strength to resist you or could take refuge in a stronghold} (Surah Hud 11:80).
Musa, when he said: {So I fled from you when I feared you} (Surah Shu'ara 26:21).
And Harun, when he said: {Indeed, the people have oppressed me and were about to kill me} (Surah A'raf 7:150)."
Then (he) arranged the Qur'an and went out to the people, carrying it in a garment with him, and it was creaking under the weight. He said to them: "This is the Book of Allah, which I have arranged as commanded me and instructed me by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), as it was revealed."
Some of them said to him: "Leave it and go on."
He replied: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to you: 'I am leaving behind in you the two heavy things, the Book of Allah and my Ahlul Bayt. They will not separate until they return to me at the Pond. If you accept them, then accept me with them. I will judge between you based on what is in it of Allah's commandments.'"
They said: "We have no need for it or you," so turn away with it. "And he turned away with you; do not part from it or it from you."
So he turned away from them, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and those with him remained in his home, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had instructed him.
But they sent to his home, besieged it, and burned his door, forcibly dragging him out and pressuring the Lady of the Women (peace be upon her) at the door until she miscarried (Muhsin). They took him by force to pledge allegiance, but he refused, and said: "I will not do it." They said: "We will kill you." He replied: "If you kill me, I am a servant of Allah and the brother of His Messenger." They spread his hand, and he closed it, and they found it difficult to open it, so they wiped over it while it was closed....
