Some of the emigrants (Muhajirin) and the helpers (Ansar) delayed in pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr and sided with Ali ibn Abi Talib, including: Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, al-Fadl ibn Abbas, al-Zubair ibn al-Awwam ibn al-As, Khalid ibn Sa'id, al-Miqdad ibn Amr, Salman the Persian, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Ammar ibn Yasir, al-Bara' ibn Azib, and Ubay ibn Ka'b .... Among those who delayed in pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr was Abu Sufyan ibn Harb .... Khalid ibn Sa'id was absent .... It reached Abu Bakr and Umar that a group of the emigrants and the helpers had gathered with Ali ibn Abi Talib in the house of Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah. So they came in a group and even forced their way into the house. Ali came out with a sword, and Umar met him and wrestled with him. Umar overpowered him, broke his sword, and they entered the house. Fatimah emerged and said: "By Allah, you will either leave, or I will uncover my hair and turn to Allah in supplication!" And they left, as did those who were in the house. The group stayed for several days, then one by one, they began to pledge allegiance, but Ali did not pledge allegiance until six months later, though some said it was forty days....
